The Bruce Museum prides itself on exploring the intersection of Art and Science. We have recently completed an expansion project that has more than doubled the size of the museum, including the opening of nine new or newly renovated galleries and three new permanent collection storage spaces. We seek a Collections Manager to join our team as we enter this exciting new era. The successful candidate will oversee care for/management of the museum’s diverse collection comprising more than 32,000 objects from the fields of Natural History, History, Ethnology, Archaeology, and the Fine Arts.

Oversee Care of the Permanent Collection

Supervise the return and rehousing of the collections from temporary offsite storage into new collections storage areas. Implement standard museum best practices for the storage, movement, and display of the permanent collection to ensure its long-term safety, security, and preservation.  Contribute to the management of the department budget relating to collection conservation, photography, and offsite storage. Assist Curator(s) and Registrar(s) with preparation of permanent collection objects for Bruce Museum installations and outgoing loans.

Implement Standard Museum Best Practices for Collection Records

Manage the Collections Management Software including maintaining the collections catalog, assisting Curatorial staff with research and documentation of collection objects, and ensuring compliance with international, federal, and state regulations. Develop a keen knowledge of, and establish strict adherence to, the Bruce Museum Collections Management Policy. Process and catalog new acquisitions and attend quarterly Collections Committee meetings. Create and maintain accession and deaccession files including letters of acceptance / refusal, signed Deeds of Gifts, and tax forms from donors for works donated to the Museum.

Management

Train and supervise Collection Associate(s) or contract/temporary staff, fellows, interns, and volunteers on collection protocols and oversee collections database projects.

Public Roles

Respond to public inquiries and requests for information about permanent collection objects and images. Manage access to collections for research, exhibition, or loan purposes by visiting scholars and the public.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Art, Art History, Science, Anthropology, or related field; Master’s Degree in Museum Studies or a related field preferred. A demonstrated track record may be considered as an alternative to a higher degree.
  • Professional Experience: A minimum of five years previous Collections Management experience with evidence of responsibility for a diverse museum collection plus knowledge of current museum standards and best practices.
  • Considerable experience working with collections management databases; experience migrating collections data or overseeing collections storage movement projects preferred.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and organizational skills capable of handling multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Excellent communication skills; highly organized and detail-oriented; strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaborate with staff in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
  • Experience handling artwork and museum objects.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
