The Metropolitan Museum of Art is seeking eligible candidates for a Kress Interpretive Fellowship for 2023-2024. The Kress Fellowship aims to cultivate early career professionals interested in interpretive careers in art museums, focusing on interdepartmental collaborations and developing institutional understandings of visitor learning and engagement.
The Kress Fellow will play a critical role in supporting the development of an interpretive research and visitor evaluation strategy at The Met. Together with their supervisors, the Fellow will collaboratively develop and execute front-end and summative studies for upcoming exhibitions, reinstallations, and capital projects. The Fellow will also be encouraged to pursue independent, interdisciplinary research on best practices for interpretive practice and evaluation and their applications within The Museum.
Housed in the Education Department, the Kress Fellow will work in collaboration with the Chair of Education and the Project Manager for Interpretive Planning. Eligible candidates are those who have recently completed an MA degree in Art History, Art Education, Museum Studies, or a related field in the Humanities or Social Sciences. A demonstrated interest in interpretive planning for art museums is essential, as is knowledge of qualitative research methods. The fellow must have strong interpersonal skills and an enthusiasm for fomenting meaningful collaborations.
The 12-month Kress Interpretive Fellowship starts on September 5, 2023, and ends August 30, 2024. The stipend for the 12-month period is $47,000 for predoctoral applicants and $57,000 for postdoctoral applicants. The Research Scholar is expected to be in residence 5 days a week, from Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-5:00 pm. Occasional work on Saturdays is expected depending on study variability.
