Description
The Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) seeks a dynamic and collaborative Assistant or Associate Curator to being new vision to the museum’s vibrant exhibition program. In collaboration with the Executive Director & Chief Curator, this individual will contribute to developing innovative exhibitions and related programming that offer artists key opportunities at various point in their professional careers and frame our exhibition programming for nearly 40,000 visitors annually.

The Assistant or Associate Curator will work closely with the Executive Director, who is chief spokesperson for CMCA. The position offers the potential for further growth, professional development and advancement.
The Assistant or Associate Curator will contribute to the development of creative programming and strategies for visitor engagement related to exhibitions. The Assistant or Associate Curator will work closely and collaboratively with the Executive Director and Chief Curator, Associate Director, education staff, all exhibiting artists, guest speakers, contracted installation personnel, and other staff across the organization.

Qualifications
A broad knowledge of art history with expertise in the field of contemporary art and experience working with living artists. Excellent research, written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to collaborate respectfully and effectively with colleagues. Excellent negotiation, resource management, and people skills. Ability to represent the museum at public events at after-hours events. Embrace and promote diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion initiatives.
Energy and enthusiasm to reach ambitious goals while creatively applying problem-solving skills. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications. Proficient with Mac computers and Adobe Creative Suite. The candidate should have a valid driver’s license for periodically travel for studio visits and other curatorial duties.
For Assistant Curator applicants, requirements include a Master’s degree in art history or a related field, two or more years curatorial experience, and experience organizing contemporary art exhibitions and related programming, ideally within a museum or nonprofit institution.
For Associate Curator applicants, requirements include a Master’s degree in art history or a related field, five or more years of curatorial experience with a track record of organizing contemporary art exhibitions and related interpretive programming within a museum or nonprofit institution.
Ability to see, listen, and talk for extended periods. Ability to perform repetitive motions, making substantial movements of the wrists, hands, or fingers. Ability to use a keyboard and remain in a sedentary position for extended periods. Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 30 pounds and climb ladders.
