Position Summary:

The Director of JEDAI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Accessibility, and Inclusion) and Community Engagement is responsible for providing dynamic leadership around the development, implementation, and management of effective JEDAI strategies and policies while also leading community outreach, engagement, and partnerships. This position works collaboratively and strategically to build community; support a culture of learning, reflection, and improvement; nurture sustainable organizational change; and foster a just, equitable, diverse, accessible, and inclusive environment for employees and visitors. The Director of JEDAI and Community Engagement advances institutional initiatives and leads community-based engagement efforts to fulfill the museum’s mission of providing innovative and inclusive museum experiences that inspire kindness, joy, creativity, and curiosity for all learners.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Leads the design, development, and collaborative implementation of programs, policies, and strategies aimed at achieving just, equitable, diverse, accessible, and inclusive experiences for employees and visitors.
  • Works cross-functionally with internal stakeholders and partners across the museum to support and sustain JEDAI initiatives.
  • Sets outcome-oriented JEDAI goals for the organization and develops roadmaps for how to achieve them. Monitors progress, reports on status and outcomes, and holds the museum accountable to its commitments.
  • Researches, develops, and organizes training and skill-building to support organizational change, improve JEDAI knowledge, and grow understanding among museum staff.
  • Identifies professional associations or best-practice resources that may support organizational goals.
  • Works with Human Resources and hiring managers to improve recruiting and hiring strategies to attract employees from diverse backgrounds and strengthen employee retention.
  • Oversees outreach and relationship-building with community stakeholders and organizations, extending the museum’s reach through equitable partnerships.
  • Engages in targeted and intentional outreach to understand community needs, interests, and assets and designs relevant programming and engagement initiatives, with a focus on reaching previously underserved audiences.
  • Represents the museum externally and serves as an ambassador for the museum’s activities, helping to foster positive relationships and meaningful community engagement that fulfills the museum’s mission.
  • Oversees the development and provision of accommodations and programs to make the museum more accessible and welcoming to individuals with disabilities.
  • Works cross departmentally to support the museum’s commitment to universal design, promoting innovative and integrated approaches to advance accessibility.
  • Participates in JEDAI initiatives in the broader museum field.
  • Oversees the development, delivery, and evaluation of inclusive programs and community engagement initiatives, working in close partnership with members of the Center for Education, Learning, and Research and other centers across the museum.
  • Leads and mentors a dynamic team to support JEDAI efforts internally as well as external engagement.
  • Works with the Senior Director for Education, Learning, and Research to serve as staff liaisons to the Board JEDAI Committee and produce reports documenting JEDAI initiatives.
  • Chairs the employee JEDAI Council, a cross-departmental working group that meets monthly.
  • Contributes to fundraising efforts to support JEDAI and community engagement initiatives and supports grant fulfillment, tracking, and reporting.
  • Becomes deeply aware of the museum’s exhibits, philosophy, programs, audiences, and experiences and supports the ongoing growth of the museum.

 

Position Qualifications:

Experience: Five years or more of progressive experience leading organizational JEDAI initiatives.

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience leading JEDAI programming, advocacy work, community outreach, and organizational change initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to advance JEDAI initiatives and organizational change
  • Prior engagement with frameworks of anti-racism, anti-ableism, queer and feminist thought, restorative justice, or related approaches preferred.
  • Proficiency working with people of all ages from diverse races, ethnicities, genders, abilities, and other backgrounds.
  • Advanced understanding of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) preferred
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily;

Work Environment, Hours of Work, and Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional travel, evening, and weekend work is required;
  • Essential duties of this position will be performed in a museum environment, which includes interaction with the public and exposure to children and families.
