Description

The Manager of Academic Affairs manages the museum’s collection-based academic teaching, learning and research.  As an organized and strategic thinker and problem solver with a comprehensive knowledge of art history and/or a related field, this position develops, implements, and oversees CMA collaborations with faculty and college and university students. Programs include, but are not limited to, internships and fellowships, onsite tours and class visits, as well as virtual learning opportunities. In collaboration with the Director of Interpretation and Adult Programs, this position is responsible for envisioning, developing and implementing academic programs, supporting an interdisciplinary, diverse and innovative approach to object-based teaching to expand the mission of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Responsibilities 

  • Support and maintain collaborative and effective relationships with faculty and students in a rapidly changing and dynamic environment that supports the mission of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
  • Manage internship and fellowship program, including developing internal opportunities, and recruiting, onboarding, ongoing support and assessment of interns and fellows. Work in tandem with human resources department in these efforts.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Interpretation and Adult Programs, strengthen the museum’s educational role by creating programs and events that support and encourage faculty to teach from the collection and special exhibitions.
  • Collaborate with communications and other relevant departments to highlight the work of interns and fellows through the museum’s social media and blog.
  • Organize and implement the daily operations and activities related to academic programming at the museum including guided and self-guided learning experiences, as well as classroom usage and events by university partners.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Interpretation and Adult Programs, work with colleagues in the art history department at Case Western Reserve to support the joint program in art history.
  • Organize scholarly events such as symposia and colloquia in collaboration with museum colleagues and university partners.
  • Teach gallery sessions and workshops for university audiences, including but not limited to college tours and Art and Insight.
  • Administer the museum’s partnership with Tri-C Community College
  • Actively participate in related internal committees and working groups.
  • Develop and manage budgets for academic programs in collaboration with Director of Interpretation and Adult Programs
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements and Key Competencies

Master’s Degree in Arts, Art History, Education or related field and three to five years of professional museum experience in the areas of education, academic programming or an equivalent education and experience.

Broad knowledge in art history, with knowledge related to one or more of the museum’s collection areas required. Academic outreach in a museum context, preferred.

Demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse public constituencies, with a particular emphasis on collaborating with college faculty and mentoring college students. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships and to make an impact through work as a member of a collaborative team.

Hands-on administrative experience, including attention to detail, ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, problem solving, and budget planning.

Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, including strong public speaking and object-based teaching skills at the university level.

Strong written communication skills are essential, as is an ability to work with databases, word processing, online learning platforms, and other digital tools.

Ability to assess priorities, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work well under pressure, excellent time management, problem solving and analytic skills.
