The Repatriation Research Specialist will provide support to the Director of Cultural Resources with NAGPRA compliance and international repatriation, consultations, collection visits, re-evaluating NAGPRA inventories, researching repatriation claims, coordinating repatriations, coordinating with Federal agencies regarding Federal collections.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist Director of Cultural Resources and Senior Repatriation Specialist in responding to external requests for information regarding ethnographic, archaeological, and biological collections from the United States and Canada.
  • Conduct research for NAGPRA inventory re-evaluations, repatriation requests and related collections.
  • Assist with collections reviews and repatriations.
  • Assist with the drafting of Notices of Intent to Repatriation and Inventory Completion.
  • Collaborate with Federal agencies regarding federal collections housed at the AMNH.
  • Document collections that will be or are likely to be repatriated.
  • Monitor NAGPRA issues at national level and attend NAGPRA Review Committee meetings.

The expected salary range for the Repatriation Research Specialist is $47,000 – 52,000. This position is overtime eligible and the AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.A in anthropology required.
  • Experience working with anthropological collections.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.A. in anthropology preferred.
  • Experience working with osteological and archaeological collections preferred. Archaeological field school highly desirable.
