ALFRED APPEL, JR. CURATORIAL FELLOWSHIP

The Delaware Art Museum is pleased to offer an annual Curatorial Fellowship. This two-month Fellowship is intended for graduate students working towards a museum career. This Fellowship honors Alfred Appel, Jr., a leading scholar of American Studies and a collector of modern prints and photographs.

The focus of the Fellowship changes each year based on institutional need. The Fellowship requires two months of full-time work, or the equivalent in part-time hours. The timing of the Fellowship is flexible and can be carried out full-time or part-time, based on applicant and institutional commitments, and must be served
between May and September 2023.

The 2023 Appel Curatorial Fellow will work collaboratively with a University of Delaware Graduate Research Assistant on the organization, research, writing, and outreach efforts for an exhibition exploring and honoring the legacy of artist and scholar James E. Newton. Dr. Newton was an accomplished visual artist, impactful
professor, and dedicated scholar. He exhibited throughout the United States and abroad following the completion of his MFA degree from UNC Chapel Hill. Dr. Newton continued his studies, receiving a doctorate in curriculum development in Black Studies and Education from Illinois State University. He joined the
University of Delaware faculty in 1972 and directed the Black American Studies Program until his retirement in 2005.

This two-venue exhibition will be on view in Gallery 9 at the Delaware Art Museum and in Mechanical Hall Gallery at the University of Delaware in spring 2024. The exhibition will be assembled from public and private collections as well as the estate of the artist. The Appel Curatorial Fellow will work closely with Margaret
Winslow, Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art. Amanda Zehnder, Chief Curator and Head of Museums, will curate the University of Delaware exhibition with support from the Graduate Research Assistant. As this is a collaborative project, both curators and museums will work together to ensure that the exhibitions complement each other while remaining separate undertakings.

RECEIVING THE FELLOWSHIP
A stipend of $3,500 is available for the Fellowship. The Fellowship is intended for those who are currently enrolled in an art history graduate program and are planning a museum career. While the project may require off-site research, the fellow is expected to work on site regularly during the two-month period of the
Fellowship, pending any unforeseen COVID-related restrictions.

IMPORTANT DATES
The deadline to apply is March 1, 2023. Notification of the successful applicant will be announced by April 1, 2023. The chosen candidate will then be asked to provide a date for assuming the Fellowship by May 1, 2023.
The Fellowship must be carried out between September 1, 2023 – December 31, 2023.
