JOB SUMMARY
The New-York Historical Society seeks a full-time Associate Registrar to provide support for all aspects of its traveling exhibition program. The Associate Registrar will work directly with the Deputy Museum Director and collaborate with other members of the Collections Department as well as exhibition curators and designers to ensure the safe and effective travel of exhibitions.
 
New York Historical has developed an active program of traveling exhibitions, both drawn from the Museum’s outstanding collection and loans from other institutions and lenders. During 2023 and 2024, nine exhibitions are planned for travel to eleven museums, mostly within the United States. This role will be required to travel domestically to oversee work on exhibitions at other venues.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Review and maintain traveling exhibition records, including facility reports, loan agreements, and condition reports;
  • Assist with the preparation of exhibition contracts and other exhibition documents;
  • Assist with the development of packing and installation guides for traveling exhibitions;
  • Coordinate packing and shipping of traveling exhibitions;
  • Track exhibition budgets and processing of invoices;
  • Travel to exhibition venues to oversee unpacking/packing, condition checking, and installation/deinstallation as needed for periods of up to one week;
  • Additional duties are requested.
REQUIREMENTS
  • BA/BS degree in a related field; MA in museum studies, art history, history, material culture or related field preferred;
  • A minimum of three to five year of museum exhibition registration experience including work on traveling exhibitions;
  • Experience with TMS (The Museum System) collections management database;
  • Knowledge of current registration methods and art handling techniques;
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity and accessibility;
  • Superior organizational skills;
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and tight deadlines;
  • The ability and comfort level to travel outside of New York City for extended periods of time.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Sedentary computer work required. May be required to stand for extended periods and lift objects (up to 25lbs). Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
 
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The expected salary range for this position is $60,000-$65,000. The successful candidate will be offered a salary within this range based on specific factors such as their individual qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.
