Historic Hudson Valley (HHV) in Tarrytown, NY, seeks a Director of Education (DOE) to join its leadership team. The DOE will be an inspired creator of high-quality education, program and evaluation materials and an enthusiastic talent manager. HHV has worked for more than a decade to deliver galvanizing, thought-provoking interpretive materials rooted in primary sources and new research. The DOE will be knowledgeable about U.S. history and committed to new interpretive strategies to engage visitors and students with difficult topics, including the two primary themes of HHV’s work, Northern slavery and women’s history. Working closely with the VP of Programs and Engagement, the Director of Public History and three direct reports, the DOE will oversee the translation of broad interpretive themes and content into specific education materials to be used at each of five historic sites and online.
The DOE will be a skilled and diplomatic people person, acting as support for site managers in the training, hiring and development of HHV’s 60+ part-time museum educators and ensuring that HHV’s educational programming and staff align with HHV’s evolving goals. The DOE will on occasion lead tours and staff program events and will be expected to spend time at each site on a regular basis.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Develop and oversee the delivery of engaging onsite and virtual field trips, tours, and after-school programs for HHV’s five sites
- Develop lesson plans and curricular material for K-12 students and teachers, including resource guides and evaluation protocols
- Design assessment tools, conduct program evaluations, and deliver reports on learning and program outcomes throughout the year
- With HHV leadership, facilitate national audience outreach that positions HHV as part of the national conversation around museum education and historic-site interpretation, including developing workshop materials and organizing a robust and diverse educator advisory council for HHV.
- Create and maintain policies and procedures for Education operations, including staff management, stakeholder communications and audience outreach and development
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALITIES
- Master’s degree in museum studies, U.S. history, women’s studies, African American studies, or related field of study or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of programmatic and/or museum education experience at a museum, historic house, or educational nonprofit
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a manager of staff
- Significant experience in tour and program development, particularly in the development of K-12 programs, materials and classroom resources
- Experience designing and implementing evaluation tools and in qualitative and quantitative outcome measurement
- Familiarity with and active interest in HHV’s interpretive themes, especially Northern slavery, women’s history, and American history
- A team player who is happy to roll up their sleeves when needed and enjoys working within an ambitious, mission-driven organization
- Computer and media skills, including proficiency in the Microsoft Office, WordPress, and iMovie suites, and willingness to learn ticketing and project management software
COMPENSATION
The annual salary will be between $100,000 and $120,000.
