Description

The Brooklyn Museum seeks a focused and detail-oriented Research Assistant for a one-year position to undertake research related to digital projects with the Ancient Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern art collections. The candidate will work closely with the curator(s) of Egyptian, Classical, and Ancient Near Eastern Art to identify and research collection objects suitable for media projects, conceptualize innovative media object presentations, and conduct historical and art historical research. The Research Assistant will also aid in compiling excavation images and information and assisting with the digital reconstruction of objects and/or their original locations.

The successful candidate must be detail oriented and a creative thinker with the ability to multitask. They should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, a demonstrated ability to be well organized, and a devotion to scholarly work. The candidate should have extensive coursework in Egyptology and familiarity with Ancient Near Eastern Art.

Since this position is research based, we expect the candidate to be able to conduct research independently and to have knowledge of existing scholarly resources.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as liaison with the Digital Engagement department on current projects and prepare progress reports as needed
  • Take an active and creative part in conceptualizing and planning digital media projects as directed
  • Carry out independent scholarly research and draft textual summaries of research results
  • Reach out to institutions with related objects or information related to each research project
  • Research digital engagement projects at other cultural institutions and draft search results
  • Collaborate on special projects as needed

 

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or equivalent in Egyptology preferred, with specific expertise in ancient Egyptian art and/or coursework in Ancient Near Eastern art
  • Knowledge of in-house and online research methods, as well as of other scholarly resources
  • Ability to work on multiple assignments at one time
  • Excellent time-management skills
  • Knowledge of collection management databases (The Museum System) preferred

Preferred Skills:

  • One year of related research experience
  • Knowledge of Egyptian hieroglyphs and/or other ancient languages
  • Reading knowledge of French and/or German languages
  • Ability to interpret archaeological reports
  • Understanding of digital humanities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Word and PowerPoint) and Google Suite
  • Ability to work alone and collaboratively
  • Keen eye for editing text
