Job-FT – Registrar – MIT List Visual Arts Center – July 25

The MIT List Visual Arts Center is hiring a full time Registrar.  The position will mainly focus on our Permanent Collection and Public Art Collection.  All applicants should apply through our MIT Careers page.

 

Job Description
REGISTRAR, List Visual Arts Center, to serve as part of a registrarial team of two who are responsible for an active program of temporary and touring exhibitions and MIT’s permanent collection of contemporary art (much of which is publicly sited on campus and loaned to students, faculty, and staff). Will be responsible for the care, movement, storage, inventory, and records of MIT’s permanent collection of 3,500+ artworks; supervise the preparator and registrar’s assistant; organize and maintain digital and paper collection records; establish conservation priorities and arrange for treatment of works; arrange for and coordinate photography and framing; plan and coordinate periodic inventories; review–with the director–art loan requests from other institutions; respond to and coordinate rights and reproduction and research requests; arrange and coordinate the shipping, conservation, framing, packing, and insurance for all artworks from the collection and on loan for exhibition; monitor gallery and storage environmental conditions; review facility reports and contracts of prospective venues; create and maintain pertinent temporary exhibition records (loan forms, condition reports, receipts, checklists, etc.); and advise gallery manager on the proper and safe installation of art.

Job Requirements
REQUIRED: at least four years’ experience in art museum registration and with temporary exhibition logistics, including the organization of international traveling exhibitions; an interested in working with artists on new projects; detail-orientation; and flexibility in thinking and problem solving. A team player with knowledge of standard museum registration methods would be well-suited for a university art gallery environment with a small staff. Excellent computer and communications skills and familiarity with EmbARK Collections Manager and EmbARK Web Kiosk are desired. Master’s degree preferred.  Job #14989-N
