This position is the Program Manager for PORTAL, the National Portrait Gallery’s Scholarly Center, located in the History Department. The National Portrait Gallery is devoted to the research, acquisition, exhibition, care and management of art relating to U.S. history, biography and the study of portraiture. Through its exhibitions, programming, website, press, social media and other digital initiatives, the museum reaches a national and international audience of millions, serving scholars, educators, students, researchers and the general public.
This position will be responsible for all programs including lectures, symposia, prizes, and workshops, and they work cross-departmentally to plan events, lectures and symposia; coordinating logistics, managing correspondence and scheduling. They also draft correspondence and runs of show for PORTAL programming; develop and manage all program budgets; and complete all procurement related to PORTAL programming. The incumbent will also create and track a marketing plan, coordinate and draft text for advertising, social media marketing, and create monthly PORTAL newsletters.
This position also performs administrative work for the History Department, routing and tracking new candidate evaluations, managing the collection status of sitters in the collection, and monitoring contemporary and support collection re-assessments.
Highly qualified applicants will possess an undergraduate degree in liberal arts, graduate degree preferred. They will have demonstrated experience in live and virtual event production, working with artists and scholars to develop lectures and visual presentations, using design software to produce marketing and program materials, and project management to include budget tracking. An ability to speak in languages in addition to English is also desirable.
This is a trust position, i.e. not a federally funded job, in a range on the grade 9 pay scale depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
