Job Title: Museum Educator Apprenticeship

Location: Wilmington, DE

Dates: September 7, 2022 – June 9, 2023 (9 months)
Hours: 50 hours per month, 450 hours total
Pay: $1,000 per month

Join a cohort of Museum Educators at the Delaware Art Museum who provide critical learning experiences for youth and foster positive connections with museums through gallery tours. The Museum Educator Program offers emerging professionals, recent college graduates, freelancers, and
art/education-interested individuals an opportunity to develop professional skills for working in museum education and/or informal educational settings. Educators gain experience working in a team oriented environment by collaborating with each other to design and lead tours and activities that align with educational goals and model the Museum’s educational values. Additionally, Educators will
collaborate with volunteers and teaching artists and contribute to special projects, partnerships, and public programs in the Learning & Engagement Department.

Responsibilities & Duties
• Lead in-gallery and virtual tours of the Museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions to students grades K – 12.
• Train on participatory tour techniques that engage students in dialogue, movement, writing and drawing activities, and more. Museum Educators will receive training and readings on art historical content and will be expected to do some at-home study and tour preparation.
• Museum Educators will work together as a professional learning community, meeting to reflect after each tour and sharing techniques, resources, experiences, and knowledge with each other.
• Additional projects related to museum education programming will be assigned as they arise such as lesson planning, assisting at public programs, administrative support, and/or leading special projects with schools.

Schedule & Expectations
• Required training dates (paid): 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. September 7-9, September 14-16,
September 19-20, plus ongoing training once a month (day/time TBD with cohort).
• 50 hours per month.
• Hybrid work environment: Most tours and training are onsite. Tour prep, virtual tours, and some training sessions will be virtual.
• Tours primarily take place between 9am – 12pm Tuesday – Friday. Tour schedules are
coordinated monthly; however, additional opportunities may arise. Educators are encouraged to lead two tours a week. Regular shifts may be requested.
• Hours and type of work may vary month to month depending on training, tour demand, and holiday schedule. To fulfill monthly hours when no tours are scheduled, Museum Educators will participate in training, curriculum prep, and additional opportunities within the Learning & Engagement Department.
• Prior to each tour, educators are expected to coordinate, collaborate, and communicate with each other as well as volunteers. Following each tour, Educators and volunteers will participate in a group reflection.

Ideal Skills & Knowledge
• We seek applicants with backgrounds in art, history, and/or education and a range of skillsets, to form a cohort of educators who will inform and support each other’s practice.
• Experience working with youth.
• Knowledge of and/or interest in art and culture.
• Proficiency with PowerPoint and Zoom. Virtual teaching experience desired.
• Interest or experience in teaching with art as a primary resource.
• Collaborative and collegial team member.

Additional skills and knowledge, desired but not required:
• Diversity, anti-racism, implicit bias, and/or trauma-informed education training
• Experience working with students with disabilities
• Experience working with English Language Learners
• Spanish proficiency
• Studio art experience
