About the Museum:
The Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally, and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by Black culture. It is a site for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society. The Studio Museum is in the midst of a comprehensive, multi-million dollar Capital Campaign to build a new museum on 125th Street in Harlem, designed by architect Sir David Adjaye.
About the Position:
The Administrative Associate to the Director’s Office will report directly to the Chief Strategy Officer and Chief of Staff. This position will provide critical support to the Director’s Office and assist in the planning, management, and preparation of materials required to effectively support the activities of the Director and Chief Curator and work on governance with the Board of Trustees.
The ideal candidate will show initiative and be well equipped to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The potential candidate will be capable of working on projects both independently and under supervision while possessing extraordinary attention to detail combined with exemplary writing and communication skills.
The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a collaborative and culturally diverse setting and possess the openness, flexibility, and diplomacy required to work with every department across the Museum.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct original research on special projects for the Director and Chief Curator
- Draft all written correspondence with external stakeholders for the Director’s Office
- Work with Chief of Staff on internal communication strategies
- Coordinate travel and outside activities
- Manage the coordination of meetings with the Board of Trustees
- Conduct meticulous meeting minutes at select meetings as directed by Director’s Office
- Maintain accurate paper and electronic files
- Work closely with and assist in the supervision of departmental interns
- Assist in the management of the departmental budget and calendar
- Work collaboratively across multiple departments
- Other duties as assigned
Education/Experience
- The Museum seeks to attract candidates with both traditional and non-traditional professional experiences. Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Africana Studies, Arts Administration, Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field. Those with significant work experience and certifications will also be considered.
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills and experience advocating and communicating with a broad and diverse audience
- Excellent computer skills, particularly MS platforms, including Word, Photoshop, Outlook, and Excel, digital imaging experience a plus
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work well with others as part of a team
- Familiarity with New York art and cultural communities

- This position is non-exempt.
- Fast-paced environment with varying levels of guests and employees present.
- Building Accessibility – office locations are wheelchair accessible, with elevators in the building. Other accessibility accommodations can be further discussed.
- Office desks include acrylic partitions, and the Museum adheres to COVID-19 safety guidelines as mandated by New York City and State. Hybrid role with future full time in person role.

Salary range is competitive and is commensurate with experience. The Studio Museum in Harlem also provides a competitive benefits package, including medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance, a retirement account, and substantial vacation time.
