Description

MASS MoCA seeks a creative and energetic leader to serve as a confident and passionate manager for K – 12 school programming at the museum, online, and in the community. The Manager of School Programs serves a vital role to foster strong relationships with school administrators, teachers, students, and colleagues across departments to create and implement innovative education programs and outreach.  This is an exciting time to join MASS MoCA, to work collaboratively with the school community to develop and implement relevant and impactful education programs and to determine how best to partner with schools and serve students in a changed world.

The Manager of School Programs will sustain and deepen the museum’s relationships with partner elementary and high schools, creating a structure to maintain those existing relationships while building capacity to foster  new ones.  Additional responsibilities include the development of on-line resources, programs, and engagement strategies for students in all grades across all subjects; oversight of program evaluation; grant writing support and budgeting; school programming initiatives with area cultural organizations, curricula materials and learning approaches for all students. The Manager of School Programs trains and leads the team of Gallery Teachers, and instructs school programs as needed.  

The role encompasses:

  • Strategy and Innovation: 
    • Define a vision for and lead school programming in distinctive and creative ways that are consistent with the Museum’s mission and values.
    • Spark visitors’ curiosity by creating meaningful personal experiences for all audiences, with a primary focus on K – 12 students. 
    • Foster innovation and experimentation in developing new and enhancing existing school programs that actively encourage new and diverse audiences to explore and engage with art. 
  • Program Development: 
    • In a rapidly evolving landscape for audience engagement, develop and implement ambitious K – 12 partnership programming onsite—in the galleries, with performances, and on-line via videos and conferencing platforms.   
    • Develop and implement visual and performing teaching artist residencies
    • Create, manage, and lead professional development workshops for educators and lead strategy for the development of exhibition-based teacher resources and other related curriculum materials
  • Virtual Learning: 
    • Developed in collaboration with school partners, oversee the content development of technology platforms for learning including social media, videos channels, educational content on websites, Google Classroom, Zoom, and other tools.
  • Management:  
    • Recruit, train, and supervise Gallery Teachers and train interns who conduct programs 
  • Assessment and Evaluation: 
    • Develop and implement strategies for assessing school programs
    • Work with the Director of Education and museum leadership to analyze the findings and align program modifications with strategic goals of the institution
  • Administrative: 
    • Write grants and complete final reports
    • Develop budgets for specific programming areas
    • Track and analyze school program participation data

Requirements

 Qualifications:

  • 3+ years professional experience in museums, cultural or arts education in a leadership role, with extensive experience with school programming and tour development
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Museum Studies, Arts Education, or related field; Masters preferred. 
  • Experience with virtual learning technologies a plus

Work Conditions:

  • Position may require extended hours, work on weekends, holidays and for festivals and events

Physical Requirements:

  • For employment at MASS MoCA, candidates must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination will be required for employment.

As defined by the National Labor Relations Act, this position is part of the bargaining unit for UAW Local 2110.
