Description
Under the direction of the CEO/President, the Curator will work with the other members of the curatorial department to accomplish MAACM’s mission “to promote an understanding of the American Arts and Crafts Movement through the acquisition, conservation, preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of the decorative and fine arts associated with this historical era in American history, the late 19th and early 20th centuries.”
The Curator is responsible for executing initiatives determined by the CEO/President and assisting with departmental operations including research and interpretation, installation of collection and exhibitions, docent training, public lecturing, and other duties as assigned. The Curator will have the opportunity to create his/her own curatorial projects as time permits.
Responsibilities:
Planning, organization, and installation of permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions
Participates in the production of publications on the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, and contributes articles to scholarly and popular journals when appropriate and as time permits
Supports the interpretation of the collection, conducts research, and writes exhibition labels, didactics, and catalogs
Works with members of the Education Department to create innovative temporary exhibition content and programming, and execute the Museum-wide interpretation plan
Actively participates in guest assessment to ensure community engagement with exhibitions and interpretation materials
Requirements
Master’s degree in art history, expertise in American decorative arts or fine arts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries preferred
Minimum of 3 years of applied curatorial experience
Demonstrated abilities to work effectively as part of a team and also independently
Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to oversee projects and schedules, maintain deadlines, work within budgets, set priorities, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Applied knowledge of professional museum principles, practices, and procedures
Knowledge of scholarly research tools and methodologies
Self-directed and motivated
Collaborative, flexible, and helpful
