Collections Manager at NYC Health + Hospitals

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Collections Manager will oversee Health + Hospitals Art in
Medicine department’s extensive visual art collection dating back to the 1930’s. This position plays a critical role in coordinating the management of over 6000 visual pieces, including oversight for the digital archive, ongoing restoration efforts, care and preservation of all works of art in the collection, and in accordance with the Public Design Commission’s guidelines. The Collections Manager will support the equitable allocation of pieces to the Health and Hospitals community. The position also includes working closely with the Senior Director of Art in Medicine on incoming and outgoing loans and evidence based educational programming involving the collection in alignment with Art in Medicine’s mission.

General tasks and responsibilities will include:
The Art Collection
o Oversee artwork accessioned by the collection, including ephemera; photographs of works, condition reports, insurance records, and other pertinent documentation
o Work with the Senior Director of Art in Medicine on the collection database, standardize and supervise data entry consistent with city guidelines and industry best practices
o Perform annual inventory
o Upgrade and maintain the collections storage area if possible
o Work with Senior Director of Art in Medicine on developing internal procedures/policies for art maintenance, movement, deaccessioning, etc.

o Manage the conservation needs of artworks, prioritizing appropriate treatment given budget constraints
o Manage the processing of rights and reproduction requests, loan requests including packing and shipping arrangements, customs procedures, insurance, etc.
o Be an active member of the Art Advisory Board
o Develop and maintain annual department budget (related to the art collection)
o Develop and implement volunteer programs as needed and supervise interns
o Further develop audio and virtual art collection tours for patients and staff for maximum access
o Liaise with other City cultural agencies and offices, including the Public Design Commission, Department of Cultural Affairs etc. and represent NYC Health + Hospitals on any applicable citywide taskforces or workgroups

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB:
CERTIFICATION(S)/NYS LICENSE(S):
EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:
• A Baccalaureate Degree issued upon
completion of a four-year course in an
accredited college or university;
• A Master’s Degree from an accredited college
or university, and three years of professional
experience in collection management
preferred

KNOWLEDGEABLE IN:
• Background in arts and collections
management
• Knowledge of arts in health and patient
experience

PREFERRED SKILLS:
• Strong organizational skills
• Passion for visual art and art history
• Strong written and verbal communications
skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of professional
museum practices and standards, including
safe object handling, packing and shipping,
proper storage, security measures and object
numbering techniques
• Awareness of culturally responsive collections
management practices

COMPUTER PROGRAMS/SOFTWARE OPERATED:
• Microsoft Office products
• Artwork Archive (web-based relational database)
• Preferred knowledge of cataloging
(MARC)(PastPerfect)

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
• 3-5 years of full time experience in collection
management
