About:
The Peabody Essex Museum, one of the most dynamic art and culture museums in the country, is seeking an Associate Registrar to manage PEMs collection documentation program, which includes support for intake and processing of new acquisitions. The position is responsible for cataloging, photographing, handling and numbering collection objects, assessment of condition and coordination of conservation and storage needs, including IPM, and oversight and coordination of collection documentation projects. The Associate Registrar is responsible for establishing and monitoring documentation standards and reporting formats, overseeing related training and providing quality control in documentation initiatives, and supervising contracted staff and interns for collection documentation.
The Associate Registrar also coordinates registration activities for artist commissions and related exhibitions (including contracting, conservation, preparation, packing, shipping, insurance, display and artist/courier travel, and all related data entry, filing, documentation and communication), and provides general departmental support for budgets, supplies, spaces, and workflows. This position collaborates regularly with Collection Services, Curatorial, Exhibition Planning and Creative Services staff to facilitate access and create awareness around PEMs Collection, Exhibition and Programming initiatives.
Requirements:
A bachelors degree in art history, museum studies or related field, as well as three to five years of experience in registration, preferably in a museum setting is desirable. Successful candidates will have any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities that meet the job requirements. The Peabody Essex Museum can and will provide training for some required experiences and abilities listed above. A thorough understanding of current registration principles and best practices along with strong prioritization, organizational and communication skills is required. Proficiency in MS Office, Google Workspace, collections and project management systems is desired, as is experience or training in digital photography and image processing.
The Associate Registrar will be based at PEMs Collection Center in Rowley, with regular responsibilities at Museum facilities in Salem, MA, so reliable transportation is required. Occasional additional travel may be needed for off-site evaluations and to courier objects.
