Job Summary

The Registrar oversees care of collections, records, and documentation ensuring compliance with museum policies and AAM best practices of stewardship, appraisal, accession, and deaccession. The Registrar manages incoming and outgoing loans, conservation arrangements, packing and shipping arrangements. The Registrar supports the overall curatorial department through documentation for Collections Committee, assistance with exhibition planning, installation, and interpretation; supervision of curatorial interns and volunteers; and engaging donors, artists, colleagues, contractors and the public to support the overall mission.

Job Responsibilities

Manages overall physical care of collections, within storage area(s) of the museum, while on exhibition, on loan to other institutions, or in transit, as defined in the Museum’s Collections Management Policy. Ensures that objects in collections are stored and handled according to museum standards. Identifies conservation issues and arranges for conservation of objects as needed. Oversees monitoring of climate in the museum and storage. Works with Shaw Center and LA Office of State Buildings to resolve problems. (25%)

Manages creation and maintenance of all records and database for objects in the collections, including researching, cataloging and photographing all objects and maintaining publication, exhibition, insurance, and location records. Generates reports for museum staff or others. Coordinate rights and reproductions of images from the museum collection, including requests for images from the collection and negotiating copyright agreements with artists. (20%)

Makes registration arrangements for incoming and outgoing object loans. Coordinates contract arrangements with lenders, museums, and LSU. Oversees production of documents and records concerning exhibitions, arrangement for incoming and outgoing transportation of loans and exhibitions. Prepares loan agreements and condition reports arranges for shipping and insurance. Monitors status of l Monitors the condition of objects on exhibition. Ensures that objects are handled and displayed according to museum standards and that conditions of exhibition contracts are met. (15%)

Assist with exhibition planning and installation including communicating checklist, loan conditions, and agreement standards with curatorial team. Assist with handling, packing, transport, and installation for exhibitions and loans. Assist with interpretation through editing, proofreading, and production of exhibition texts. (15%)

Performs yearly inventory of the collection in accordance with Louisiana state law. Implements, supervises, and routinely updates the museum’s collections related policies and procedures including an annual review of the Disaster Management Plan. Ensures effective security of the museum collections, including perimeter security and security issues while on display. Serves as liaison with Shaw Center security. (10%)

Coordinates arrangements for acquisitions to the permanent collection. Arranges for shipping, loan documents, and insurance for acquisitions. Prepares committee agenda and documentation. Prepares and processes acts of donation and payment justifications for LSU and LSU Foundation. (10%)

Support curatorial department through organizing and overseeing collections-based projects for interns, student workers and volunteers. Collaborate with programming, communications, and development as needed to fulfill the museums mission and share collections. (5%)

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in art history, museum studies, or related field with 2 years experience working in museum setting with collections and completing registration duties including object handling, acquisitions, object loans and related documentation and shipping, and exhibition installation. Experience with collections management database(s).

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in art history, museum studies, or related field with 3 or more years experience with Past Perfect collections management, including online sharing.

Special or Physical Qualifications

Candidate must have ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to stoop, kneel, bend, and lift repeatedly; ability to lift 50lbs; and ability to handle with extreme dexterity and control. Current driver’s license and the ability to drive a 15-passenger van or small truck long distances. Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding and work on high lift. Willingness to work unscheduled night and weekend hours when needed.
