Accountable to:  Permanent Collection Curator

Position Summary: To aid the Permanent Collection Curator in all aspects related to the Permanent Collection Department’s role within the Museum.


Essential Functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Updates and completes computerized museum records under the guidance of the Permanent Collection Curator and Associate Curator.
  • Assists in the care and presentation of artwork in the Museum’s collection, both in storage and on display within as well as outside of the Museum.
  • Strengthens and improves access to the Permanent Collection image archive, object files and Departmental records.
  • Assists in the coordination of logistics, conservation treatments and photography sessions, framing and mount-making projects as well as facilitates visiting V.I.P’s, scholars, volunteers and fellows.
  • Assists with light cleaning and coordinates maintenance schedule for the Permanent Collection Vaults and Office.
  • Assists with correspondence and filing.
  • Oversees I.T. needs of the Permanent Collection Department under the direction of the Permanent Collection Curator.
  • Assists the Permanent Collection Curator acquire artwork for the Permanent Collection.
  • Assists the Permanent Collection Curator organize and curate exhibitions.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Museum President.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Individual should be pursuing or have earned a Master’s Degree in Museum Studies or Latin American Art History / Chicano Studies.  
  • Candidate should have interest in documenting and caring for Mexican art and historical artifacts.  
  • Preference will be given to the individual with art handling, imaging experience and computer skills.  
  • Candidate must be organized, possess interpersonal skills to work with art collectors/donors, work with other staffers as well as independently and adapt to flexible hours as necessary.  
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs. and climb ladders. 
  • Must know Spanish and have experience with FileMaker, Adobe Suite, digital imaging equipment and be familiar with best practices within a museum setting.

Environmental Demands:

  • Must be able to plan, prioritize, organize and execute multiple initiatives simultaneously and independently.
  • Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time; carry, lift, push or pull up to 35 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to manually operate business machinery.
  • Travel within the U.S. with advance notice may be required.
  • There is minimal environmental exposure.
