2022 Guggenheim x NYU Museum Studies Publications Internship

Publications Internship at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is partnering with New York University’s Museum Studies Program to offer a remote summer internship in the Publications Department. Furthering the Guggenheim’s mission to promote the understanding and appreciation of art, the Publications Department publishes exhibition and collection catalogues and books distinguished by the depth of their scholarship as well as the high quality of their design and production. The department additionally collaborates with teams across the museum, providing editorial and production expertise toward the creation of educational materials, exhibition didactics, and digital initiatives.

The remote internship program will begin on Monday, June 6, 2022, and end on Friday, July 29, 2022. The internship program requires a commitment of 35 hours per week for eight weeks, including attendance at weekly Museum Culture Seminars. The experience will be completely virtual. No on-site work at the museum or its offices is expected. The internship program is a paid opportunity. We are pleased to offer a stipend in the amount of $4,200 to the intern for full participation in the program. The stipend includes an additional $500 for professional development.

Summer Internship Program Description

The paid Summer Internship Program provides practical training to current undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in the arts and museum fields. Interns are assigned to departments based on their academic background, professional skills, interests, and goals. Under the supervision of designated staff members, interns work both independently and collaboratively with their departments to gain comprehensive experience through immersive projects. In addition, interns are required to participate in Museum Culture Seminars. These weekly meetings are used to develop transferable skills, such as public speaking and writing, as well as to create an intentional space for interns to build a sense of community. The seminars are designed to help students acquire the necessary training to advance their career goals as well as network with leading practitioners in the museum field.

Museum Culture Seminar
The Museum Culture Seminar enables interns to create community, network, and gain deeper insight into the everyday work of museums and arts organizations. During the seminar, interns will hear from Guggenheim staff members in varied departments and arts professionals that will deepen professional training, critical thinking, and presentation skills. We will learn about the Guggenheim’s mission, culture, exhibitions, and collection through independent close-looking and group discussion. Together we will cultivate a broad understanding of professional practice in the arts.
