Youth Climate Program Manager at the Wild Center
Job/Position Title: Youth Climate Program Manager
Full Time Position, based at The Wild Center
Organization: The Wild Center, Tupper Lake NY
Organizational Description:
The Wild Center’s mission is to Ignite an enduring passion for the Adirondacks where people and nature can thrive together and offer an example for the world. As a demonstration site for sustainable design, the 54,000 sq. ft. museum building is also the first Silver LEED certified museum in NY, located on a 115-acre campus of water & forest resources and all-season trails. From the outset the museum’s vision was to re-imagine ways to present traditional science to people of all ages and connect people to the rustic beauty right outside its doors. Programs focus on the animals, plants and environment of the Adirondacks, providing engaging science-based–and often whimsical–learning opportunities through interactive exhibits and experiences. The museum features galleries devoted to the region’s ecosystems and geological history, a panoramic theater, handling objects in a naturalist’s cabinet, programming in NOAA’s Science on a Sphere exhibit Planet Adirondack, and welcoming retail and café amenities. Outside, visitors experience the region’s beauty on trails, the Raquette River waterfront and the signature Wild Walk, which takes visitors up a trail of bridges and elevated walkways through the treetops of the Adirondack forest to see nature from a different perspective.
Since opening in 2006, The Wild Center has had a dramatic impact on Tupper Lake, which like many former manufacturing towns, had seen better days. And as the museum’s presence continued to expand throughout the region, it has helped foster a renewed community spirit and pride of place by celebrating and interpreting the same natural assets that had brought prosperity, opportunity and diversity to the region for generations. The Wild Center is an important economic driver for the region, its staff and visitors contribute millions to the regional economy each year and support 300+ regional jobs. Today, The Wild Center is a national leader in providing informal, science-based programming, youth climate education and newly developed online offerings.
