Basic Details

Position Title: Teen Programs Summer Intern

Position Description: The Brooklyn Museum Education Division seeks a summer intern to support the Museum Apprentice Program. The Museum Apprentice Program provides an opportunity for teens to teach at a major art museum. After attending training two to three times monthly from November through June, teens deliver tours to day campers ages 6-13 for six weeks in July and August.

Requirements: Individual must hold a B.A. or B.F.A. (or be a rising Junior/Senior) in studio art, art history, museum education, art education, anthropology or related field. The individual has experience working with children or teenagers; good research, writing and oral communication skills; and a cheerful, friendly, outgoing disposition. This individual must be extremely detail-oriented, able to manage numerous tasks efficiently.

Responsibilities: Teen Programs Summer Intern will work directly with the Teen Programs Coordinator to support the Museum Apprentices during their training week and throughout the summer. Intern will provide guidance in finding appropriate information for Apprentices’ guided tours, assistance with the creation of interactive museum learning activities, and the development and improvement of their public speaking skills. The Intern is required to participate in all training activities, and will also assist or lead team building activities and professional skills workshops for Apprentices. The Intern must be available throughout the summer for one-to-one consultation with Apprentices regarding their teaching responsibilities as well as the fulfillment of their responsibilities for the Apprentice program. During the teaching period, the individual will also act as program evaluator, observing Apprentices teach and discussing their lessons with them before and after each tour. Intern will also assist and supplement the Apprentices’’ efforts to create written and video documentation of their work and progress in the program. Intern will collect written and visual data to assist coordinator in day-to-day operations, evaluation, and marketing of the Apprentice program. The Intern also has the option of observing the Digital Artizens: Feminist Project and work with another Teen Programs Summer Intern on a collective teen programs project, to be decided.

Starting date: Monday, June 26, 2017

End date: Friday, August 18, 2017

Schedule: Schedule: 9:30 am-5 pm on scheduled work days. Intern must be available Monday, June 26; Tuesday, June 27, in addition to Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays June 28 through August 18, 2016; with some flexibility.

Compensation: Compensation: This internship is unpaid. Intern will be issued a Brooklyn Museum ID for the duration of the internship which includes a discount in the Museum Shop and Cafe, as well as free admission to most art museums throughout the United States. Academic credit may be possible.
