Description
The Museum Educator is responsible for developing and teaching exciting, high-quality educational programs in history, art, culture, and science, inspired by Long Island’s whaling history and its impacts today.

This part-time, hourly, non-exempt position offers a unique opportunity to practice a wide range of skills by leading innovative, interdisciplinary activities, and connecting people of all ages with the museum’s collection. Educator is instrumental in strengthening visitors’ appreciation of Long Island’s maritime history with other diverse topics in culture, art, and science in meaningful ways. The museum delivers programs from preschoolers to seniors; majority of events are family-friendly and are geared for children 5-12 years old.

An average of 3 weekdays with occasional weekend and evening work required; scheduling and number of hours worked per week can be seasonally flexible. Some traveling is required, as some museum programs take place off-site throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, especially in the summer season. The museum maintains a happy, friendly workplace. Most staff wear many hats, can find ways to apply their individual talents, and are expected to give 100% effort to the tasks at hand.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing or completed BA in education, or pursuing; Certification a plus; OR Degree in Life Sciences/History/Museum Studies coupled with teaching background
  • At least 1 year experience teaching in classroom or informal museum settings
  • Demonstrated skill in creating age-appropriate materials for many learning styles, including knowledge of hands-on, inquiry-based learning theories
  • Cheerful, motivated, and enthusiastic, with strong can-do attitude; excellent and professional public presentation skills; with passion for the museum’s unique purpose
  • Creative thinker; able to adapt our internal resources to make learning a fun adventure
  • Knowledge of Long Island’s maritime history/whale biology, or willingness to learn
  • Ability to integrate and adapt the arts & humanities into interdisciplinary subjects
  • Completely reliable and punctual; trustworthy to protect museum’s collection with integrity
  • Ability to travel to offsite locations with personal car, as needed (mileage is reimbursed)
  • Able to work independently or part of a close team; able to multi-task and manage time effectively in a small but busy workplace
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills; strong organizational skills
  • PC proficient (Google apps, Microsoft Publisher, Canva, Video editing skills)
  • Lifting of portable teaching bins is required (up to 40 lb)

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the creation, development, delivery, and evaluation of in-person & virtual programs, including the following:
    • School programs, mostly during weekday mornings during the school year
    • Museum-To-You programs, chiefly at Long Island libraries & schools
    • Camp programs, primarily during summer season
    • Family Events, primarily on weekends or school vacation
    •  Birthday Parties during select weekends
    • Scout programs and other education programs either on or off-site
  • Help oversee daily operations in the museum, including opening/closing
  • Assist in developing special exhibits; work with other staff in interpreting the museum’s collections
  • Furthering knowledge in the best practices of museum education
  • Undertakes or assists any special projects at the request of the Curator of Education.

Compensation starts at $17.50 an hour
