POSITION SUMMARY
Aperture is seeking an Assistant Editor to work on Aperture magazine, the foundation’s flagship publication. Reporting to the magazine’s editors, the Assistant Editor will assist with research and commissioning of magazine stories, coordinate with galleries and artists to request artwork, perform picture research, negotiate rights and permissions, assist with writing captions, proofreading, and fact-checking, and manage payments to authors and vendors. In addition to working on the quarterly print magazine and organizing long-term project research, the Assistant Editor will also assist with
books that originate from the magazine department, as well as with commissioning and producing timely articles and features on Aperture.org.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Assisting in the management of four issues of Aperture magazine per year and selected books originating from the magazine department
• Coordinating research, editing, and publishing of articles for Aperture.org
• Managing art logs, trafficking artwork, and performing related editorial and administrative tasks for the development and completion of magazine and book projects
• Managing invoicing for all department expenses and tracking quarterly and project-based financial reports
• Overseeing photo permissions and acquisitions; tracking payments; preparing captions; and maintaining files and records
• Preparing visuals for public and internal presentations about the magazine and photobooks
• Assisting in maintaining correspondence and communication with photographers, designers, and authors
• Working in collaboration with the Manager of Education and Senior Managing Editor to interview and train an editorial intern every intern session (July-December; January-June)

QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Ideally three years of editorial experience in illustrated books, an arts organization or publisher, and/or magazine, newspaper, or media outlet
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Knowledge of photography and arts media landscape
• Detail-oriented, with an ability to multitask and remain well-organized under deadline
pressure
• Ability to work in a team environment, with all levels of staff
• Basic Photoshop, InDesign, and WordPress
