Assistant Curator position at the Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Maryland

Guided by the vision and decisive leadership of the Co-Founder & Director, they will join this vibrant institution alongside the Senior Director of Collections, a fellow Assistant Curator, and the Curatorial Assistant.

Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Director of Collections, the Assistant Curator is responsible for the management of publication and catalogue production, including budgetary and editorial oversight, vendor coordination, and distribution strategy. This position will also help coordinate exhibitions and public programs, liaise directly with artists, and conduct research related to the collection. 

Essential Job Functions

  • Manage the production of museum publications, including the meticulous monitoring and maintenance of schedules, checklists, budgets, and distribution. 
  • Liaise with essayists and artists to review editorial changes, proofread interim and final versions of projects, and ensure edits are accurately incorporated and relayed to design. 
  • Coordinate/Process payments to vendors, including photographers, printers, designers, editors, copyeditors, publishers and distributors.
  • Provide exhibition support from research and development phase through realization.
  • Communicate directly with artists and their representatives to coordinate installations. 
  • Act as a liaison for internal and external stakeholders during installation planning and related activities. 
  • Research, write, and edit content related to assign exhibitions, including curatorial statements, web text, training modules for staff and other explanatory texts.
  • Provide editorial oversight for Glenstone collateral and written content.
  • With the larger Collections and Public Engagement team, assist with the development of public programming.
  • Coordinate regular departmental meetings related to assigned projects.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to upcoming publications and exhibitions as needed.
  • Other duties assigned.

Required Skills & Experience

  • B.A. in Art History or related field
  • Minimum five years experience coordinating and producing art publications, with a focus on editorial work.
  • Minimum of three years curatorial experience at a modern/ contemporary art museum, with increasing responsibility.
  • Experience with project management, particularly working on the delivery of several projects concurrently.
  • Exemplary writing and public presentation skills.
  • Strong cultural competence, interpersonal communication, planning, and organizational skills. 
  • Strong interest in contemporary art.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.A. in Art History of related field
  • Minimum of five years working in the museum field, with experience specifically in curatorial roles.
  • Experience working with living artists and artists’ estates.
  • Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and other programs. 

Compensation

$77,000-$93,000 with total benefit package, including medical, dental, vision, 401k, long-term disability, and tuition reimbursement.
