Ford Foundation Scholars in Residence at the MoMA
They will join the Museum for a one-year term, beginning in September 2022. During their time at MoMA, the Scholars will continue to pursue their own research interests with open access to MoMA’s resources, research collections, and networks, and with dedicated support in navigating these. The Scholars will participate in conversations that help shape the Museum’s collection, acquisition strategy, program and scholarship and engage with Museum staff on a regular basis: the schedule of these engagements will be shaped on arrival depending on the Scholar’s expertise and interest, but can be expected to total approx. 4-6 hours a week. Ford Foundation Scholars in Residence will be selected based on their previous record of achievement, and potential to add new layers of meaning to works in the Museum’s collection and to understandings of modern and contemporary art. The Museum strongly encourages applications from those groups historically underrepresented in the Museum field.
Nomination (or Self-Nomination)
The Museum requests nominations of individuals for the inaugural cohort of Ford Scholars in Residence whose work has substantive implications for expanding and reimagining narratives of modern and contemporary art history. Candidates may be scholars from a wide variety of disciplines with expertise from the time period (late 1800s to the present) and bearing on the subject area of the museum’s collections in all mediums. Their work may focus on historically underrepresented artists, moments, movements, and geographies, or offer a new lens on more familiar topics. They may also be creative practitioners—artists, choreographers, writers, etc.—whose work offers a compelling perspective for new understandings. Nominators should include a short statement (less than one page) on the nominee’s contributions; the field-changing framework and impact of their work; and relevance for new narratives of modern and contemporary art, as well as the nominee’s contact information and c.v..
Please send all nominations for the September 2022 inaugural cohort of the Ford Foundation Scholars in Residence at The Museum of Modern Art to researchprograms@moma.org by January 12, 2022. Final selections will be made and announced in April 2022.

Compensation
Each scholar will receive an annual stipend of $185,000.

About The Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Modern Art, dedicated to the art of our time, was established in 1929. With a dynamic exhibition program and one of the world’s largest collections of modern and contemporary art, MoMA bridges the past and present, the established and the experimental, bringing new ideas to over three million onsite visitors per year—and many more millions in the digital realm. We offer an exciting, inclusive work environment for innovative, talented individuals who are eager to take part in MoMA’s mission, responding to new ideas and initiatives with insight, imagination, and intelligence.
Research at MoMA
Research and scholarship on modern and contemporary art has been one of the Museum’s core commitments since its founding. Today we are building on this history to explore and expand narratives of modern and contemporary art; to connect people across disciplines around the study of works of art; and to share insights and research resources through innovative, digital-forward strategies.
