Archival/File Management Assistant – Ming Smith Studio
Ming Smith Studio is seeking an experienced archivist to handle a range of physical and digital archiving tasks to support both the daily needs of the studio and long-term projects. The current archiving project involves the inventorying, digitization, and organization of a large collection of silver gelatin photographs, comprising the artist’s previous work. We are looking for someone who is extremely organized, experienced with archival best practices, and interested in working with vintage black and white photographs, negatives and contact sheets. The position will also include miscellaneous administrative tasks, including responding to emails and sending image files to collaborators. Punctuality, reliability and a strong work ethic are all desired traits in a candidate.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
● Continuing migration of previously inventoried prints into FileMaker database, filling all relevant fields with accurate information
● Conducting inventory and creating documentation images of unsorted prints for migration into FileMaker
● Updating print information in FileMaker, noting sales, new editions, etc.
● Maintenance of digital file workflow and organization in Dropbox
● Ongoing digitization and filing of prints and negatives
● Assist with drafting emails and organizing calendar
Requirements:
● Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art, Art History or similar, or equivalent work experience
● Familiarity with FileMaker software
● Familiarity with Epson scanning software/workflow
● Simple Photoshop skills (spotting for dust, resizing and adjusting images)
● Experience working with photography and familiarity with photographic editioning
practices strongly preferred
● Graduates or current students of an MLIS/Archival Studies Master’s program preferred
This is a part-time position, with a desired commitment of 2 or 3 days per week (10-15 hours), with the possibility of growing into a full time role. A minimum 1 year commitment is desired. Work is conducted in-person via the artist’s home studio in Harlem, NY. Pay is $20/hour.
