Rubio Butterfield Family Fellow at The Whitney Museum of American Art

This full-time, 2-year Fellowship is a significant opportunity for an emerging curator with demonstrated knowledge of and interest in the field of Latinx art. Supervised by the Jennifer Rubio Associate Curator, the Rubio Butterfield Family Fellow will help advance programming at the core of the Museum’s commitment to Latinx initiatives. The incumbent will also contribute to the daily activities and broader initiatives of the Curatorial Department. Responsibilities range from scholarly curatorial projects to a variety of administrative tasks. Projects will include a contemporary group exhibition and the planning and implementation of bilingual content across all Museum platforms and channels. Mentorship is an important component of this fellowship opportunity, and we welcome and encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds. Proficiency in Spanish and excellent research and writing skills in English a must.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the planning and installation of exhibitions, including research, checklist development, loan forms, lender and artist relations, floor plans, didactics, and public programs.
  • Work on catalogues and other publications, including research, image rights and reproductions, and compiling bibliographical archives and other backmatter.  
  • Support of the collection, including research on artists and works, and assistance with acquisitions and gifts.
  • Write didactic labels and other copy as needed.
  • Draft digital content for social media.
  • Coordinate information among various departments, including Exhibitions and Collections Management, Publications, Graphic Design, Visitor Services, Education, Marketing, Communications, and Research Resources.
  • Presentations and exhibition tours in English and Spanish for donors/patrons/artists/community partners as part of cultivation efforts.
  • Daily administrative support, including communication with the Jennifer Rubio Associate Curator’s internal and external contacts (trustees, artists, donors, and gallerists), maintenance of records, calendar management, travel arrangements, and general office duties.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • B.A. in art history (M.A. a plus).
  • 2-3 years museum/gallery or equivalent experience in the arts
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in the field of Latinx art.
  • Excellent writing, research, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
  • Ability to handle several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Administrative and organizational skills, including experience with TMS, Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint.
