Magazzino Italian Art is currently seeking a full-time Public Relations Manager to join the museum’s international press and communications team!
This is a remote position that will become in person this summer. The museum is located at 2700 Route 9 in Cold Spring, NY.
Magazzino Italian Art is a museum and research center dedicated to advancing scholarship and public appreciation of postwar and contemporary Italian art in the United States. The nonprofit museum serves as an advocate for Italian artists as it celebrates the range of their creative practices from Arte Povera to the present. Through its curatorial, scholarly, and public initiatives, Magazzino explores the impact and enduring resonances of Italian art on a global level.
Meaning “warehouse” in Italian, Magazzino was co-founded by Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu. The 20,000 square-foot museum, designed by Spanish architect Miguel Quismondo, opened its doors in 2017, creating a new cultural hub and community resource within the Hudson Valley.
Our ideal candidate will have a passion for contemporary art & Italian culture, as well as significant experience working with the media.
The Public Relations Manager will work with the Director, Co-Founders, Communications Department, & external press agencies to oversee and implement a comprehensive media strategy and create a consistent institutional voice by crafting message materials, implementing media strategy, managing and maintaining press relations, & organizing the museum’s press archive:
• Work directly with museum’s internal team and external press agencies based in Italy and Spain to create an international press strategy for museum initiatives;
• Oversee the translation of English written materials into Italian and draft Italian press texts (including press releases, program descriptions, curatorial texts, image captions, website, and social media copy, internal museum correspondence, and more);
• Maintain press archive;
• Monitor newspapers and art periodicals for mentions of Magazzino Italian Art; Report coverage to Magazzino executive team and any other interested parties;
• Serve as the main point of contact for all press inquiries and provide on-site support to fulfill all requests; including journalist walk-throughs and film crews;
• Provide crisis support communications strategy for the museum;
• Work with internal staff to support the creation and execution of the digital media strategy for Magazzino’s website, social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter), and e-newsletter to communicate seasonal activities, deepen the engagement of existing followers/visitors, and increase new followers;
• Develop content required for promotion of Magazzino programming, including writing press and curatorial materials, newsletters, social media copy, and external communications on behalf of the Director;
• Craft Magazzino’s institutional voice and develop the ability to maintain museum standards across bilingual materials;
• Update promotional schedule and relevant parties to changes in programming schedule;
• Maintain a database of media contacts and forge new connections with high priority media on behalf of the museum;
• Pitch press coverage to a broad list of journalists on museum programming and initiatives;
• Organize press previews for exhibitions and special programs.
Desired qualifications include:
• Fluent in English; Italian speakers preferred;
• Interest and knowledge of contemporary art;
• 3-5 years of relevant experience in communications and marketing;
• 3-5 years of experience managing multiple outside partners;
• Excellent writing, proofreading, and internal communication skills;
• Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of collaborators;
• Proven ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment;
• Familiarity with Microsoft, Adobe, Mailchimp, Eventbrite & all social media platforms.
