The Seward House Museum is a 205 year old historic whose mission is to inspire curiosity and foster learning about 19th century America through the lens of the William H. Seward family by providing engaging and unique experiences; to preserve, protect and care for the collection; and to sustain the historical landscape.
The Seward House Museum is seeking applications for a competitive fellowship program. These seasonal and part-time positions will mainly serve as tour guides during the Museum’s busy summer season. Primary responsibilities include: learning SHM narrative and delivering high quality interpretations to a diverse range of visitors, assisting in greeting visitors and processing tour registrations, answering phones and providing logistical support to visitors, managing sales in the gift shop, and generally assisting staff as needed. Weekend work is required.
SHM Fellows must have very strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills. They must be able to retain historical facts, dates, and anecdotes, as well as relay that information to visitors in an engaging way for hour-long tours.
Other desired skill sets:
• Microsoft Office.
• Dedication to providing excellent customer service.
• A passion for local, state, and national history.
• Must be able to lift 25-50 pounds, stand for extended periods at a time, and climb stairs.
• Some progress on or completed Bachelor’s degree in history or related field.
