Collections Assistant Internship at the Museum of Danish America

Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and located in Elk Horn, Iowa, the Museum of Danish America is the only national institution that tells the story of Danish immigration to the United States and the influence of Denmark on American culture today.  The Museum’s broad collections are almost entirely inventoried, cataloged, and digitized, and are available online.  Much of this work has been accomplished by interns.  MoDA’s intern program includes both Danes and Americans, providing a unique international experience.

The primary task for this internship will be verifying inventory records for the textile collection, which numbers nearly 3000 pieces, and replacing the acid-free tissue in each box as it is opened.  PastPerfect records will be cross-referenced with Excel inventory lists and compared to actual box contents to verify locations.  Any additional information, photos, or condition notes will be added or updated at that time.  The Collections Assistant may also participate in deaccessioning recommendations as appropriate.

In addition, the Collections Assistant may help catalog new donations and may provide hands-on assistance during exhibit rotations.  Interns are also involved in the Collections Review Committee and Exhibitions Committee meetings, outreach activities (on and off-site), and in behind-the-scenes tours to other museums for professional development and networking opportunities.
