Collections Manager – The Tenement Museum
The Tenement Museum seeks an experienced Collections Manager. The Collections Manager reports to the Director of Curatorial Affairs and is responsible for the day-to-day oversight and preservation of the Museum’s Collections, which also include its historic structures, digital resources, and archive. Responsibilities include accessioning, processing incoming/outgoing loans, maintaining collections data systems, exhibition management, preventative conservation care, archives and records management, and emergency response and recovery.
The Collections Manager is a member of the Tenement Museum’s Curatorial Department and works closely with both the Education Department and Facilities Department.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the daily preservation program for the Museum’s historic tenements at 97 and 103 Orchard Street, with an emphasis on overseeing monthly building monitoring and identifying conservation priorities.
- Supervise access to the collections and archives, respond to public inquiries regarding the collections, and arrange loans to other cultural institutions.
- Maintain an accessible online photo database; provide access to images and updates image database records accordingly.
- Monitor environmental conditions in the museum and its collections, interpret data from environmental monitoring equipment and determine corrective action.
- Oversee the museum’s Integrated Pest Management program.
- Help develop and implement collections policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with the Education Department to identify and assemble materials for use in programs and tours.
- Collaborate with the Director of Curatorial Affairs on collections development and matters related to research on collections items and the museum’s historic properties.
- Contribute to interdepartmental exhibition planning and installation, including on digital platforms.
- Collaborate with Director of Curatorial Affairs, Education Department and others on occasional display rotations
- Sit on the Museum’s Interpretation Team to inform interpretive decisions
- Supervise interns and consultants as needed.
- Conduct tours of the Museum for the general public.
This position is non-exempt.
Qualifications:
Candidates should possess a Master’s Degree (MA/MS/MLS) in Museum Studies, Historic Preservation, History, Library Sciences, or a related field; and three or more years’ experience in collections management, archival management, and/or historic preservation. Demonstrated expertise with Museum Collections Database Past Perfect is preferred. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, and an affinity for working in an inclusive, collaborative environment are desired.
