Contractual Gallery Guides, Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum is seeking individuals with a passion for visitor experience and a strong knowledge of art history to lead private gallery tours on a contractual basis. Tour topics will include the Museum’s collections as well as special exhibitions.

Requirements:

  • At least two years of a professional art museum or teaching experience and demonstrated ability to make scholarly information accessible, accurate, and engaging for our diverse audiences.
  • B.A. in art history or related field required. M.A. desirable; current graduate students seeking such a degree are welcome to apply.
  • A broad interest and a strong background in art history
  • A passion for engaging museum visitors around art and a warm, approachable demeanor
  • Experience with using varied research materials to create experiences that enhance visitors’ direct encounters with art in a museum setting
  • Strong independent research skills and familiarity with standard art historical research resources and methods
  • Fluency in Spanish, Russian, French, or Mandarin is desirable
  • An active email account and knowledge of and comfort with Google Drive and Google Docs
  • Reliability and clear communication about scheduling and attendance

Responsibilities:

  • Through this new program, we seek to·improve our visitor experience by matching our private tour groups with guides who can accommodate their requests and interests.
  • Guides will be self-starters who are able to work independently in researching and planning gallery tours. At the same time, they will be expected to work collegially with other Museum staff and communicate with the rest of their team as needed.
  • Guides will attend training sessions for new exhibitions and will have access to shared research materials.
  • Each guide’s tours will be evaluated by the Manager of Visitor Engagement and other Museum staff before being presented to private groups. Each guide’s performance will also be reviewed for content, teaching style, and customer service on a periodic basis.
  • This program will be evolving over the upcoming year as we experiment with new tour concepts and formats. Contractual guides will be expected to show flexibility and a willingness to try new approaches.

Salary: $80-100 per tour, commensurate with experience

Schedule: Guides will be notified of upcoming, available gallery tours and scheduled for specific tours through cooperation with Visitor Experience & Engagement staff. Tours may occur during Museum open hours (Wednesday 11 am-6 pm, Thursday 11 am-10 pm, Friday-Sunday 11 am-6- pm) as well as times outside Museum open hours. Guides will also be expected to attend mandatory (paid) training sessions on a quarterly basis.
