Summer Internship at Grey Art Gallery

Are you interested in learning more about how museums work, from the inside? The Grey Art Gallery, NYU’s fine arts museum, seeks applications from NYU students, both graduate and undergraduate, for volunteer internships in summer 2017. Grey interns work closely with staff to help plan and execute gallery projects, including but not limited to exhibitions and public programs. They learn about issues in contemporary and earlier art, help with exhibition research, help educate the gallery’s visitors, and assist in producing and/or circulating Grey materials—which may include gallery installation plans and educational labels, checklists, databases, internet/social media postings, publications, and press releases.

Specific tasks may include:

  • assisting with research for Grey exhibitions and the NYU Art Collection
  • helping to draft and/or proofread museum texts, such as labels, checklists, and press releases
  • delivering gallery talks to visiting groups
  • publicizing Grey exhibitions and programs
  • attending meetings
  • aiding with correspondence, telephone, mailings, photocopying, and occasional gallery desk coverage

Qualifications:

  • solid academic background in art history
  • familiarity with word-processing software—as well as database, graphic layout, and imaging programs (the latter are desirable but not required)
  • excellent writing skills in English
  • interest in learning public speaking skills
  • efficient, well-organized, and responsible
  • responsive to supervision and also able to work independently
  • flexible and willing to participate in all aspects of museum and general office work
  • able to come to the Grey at least one full day per week, possibly more
