2019 Summer Curatorial & Collections Internship

Fraunces Tavern Museum’s mission is to preserve and interpret the history of the American Revolutionary era through public education. Housed in historic Fraunces Tavern, the permanent collection focuses on 18th and 19th century architecture, period rooms, prints, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, and manuscripts relating to or reflecting aspects of early American culture and history. Also included in the collection is material associated with the history of the Sons of the Revolution of the State of New York.

The Museum is seeking a summer intern to aid with the documentation of incoming objects as well as updating records and digitizing objects for the online collection. This internship will provide exposure to the operations of a museum collections department and the opportunity to gain experience in object handling and research.

Responsibilities:
The intern will report to the Collections Manager to evaluate and document new objects to the museum’s collection. The intern will research objects from the museums’ collection in digital and physical files to complete object records in PastPerfect and publish online. Other responsibilities will include gallery maintenance, and object handling, packing, and cleaning.

The internship will take place from May through August 2019, with flexible start and end dates. Interns must be able to commit to a schedule of 2-4 days per week for the duration of the internship, days flexible. Our hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in undergraduate/graduate level studies (history, museum studies, education, or similar) or recently graduated.
  • Detail-oriented, patient, organized, and able to work independently
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders
  • Familiarity with collections management software and Adobe Photoshop or similar image editing software a plus
  • Familiarity with Early American, Colonial American, and Revolutionary War history a plus
