Museum Research and Education Volunteer Opportunities at Mount Vernon Museum & Gardens

Job Title: Volunteer

Location: New York, NY

Description

The Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden welcomes interested graduate students in NYU’s Program in Museum Studies to join us as research or education volunteers at our historic house museum. MVHM&G is the only surviving example of a day hotel in Manhattan from the early 19th century and is located in a 1799 landmark building that was originally a carriage house. As a day hotel during the 1820s and 1830s, the Mount Vernon Hotel served middle-class New Yorkers looking to spend a day in the country, and, today, we educate visitors about 19th-century daily life and leisure activities experienced at the day hotel, as well as the history of New York and its role in the nation’s transition from colonial times to the 19th century.

Research volunteers assist staff on projects related to the museum’s interpretation of New York life (1826-1833) and the creation of content for public programs; research volunteers are needed in fall 2025 and winter/spring 2026.

Education volunteers work with school groups in delivering our elementary school curriculum; education volunteers are needed in winter/spring 2026, and because this opportunity involves children, we conduct a background check.

Time commitment for both volunteer opportunities can be flexible. We are located at 421 East 61st Street, between First and York Avenue.

Interested graduate students should submit a resume and a short statement of interest to programs.mvhmg@cda1890.org
