The Manager of Public Programs and Partnerships creates on-site events at the BMA to enact its mission to spark the creativity, imagination, and liveliness of Birmingham by connecting all its people to the experience, meaning, and joy of art. They conceptualize and implement wide-ranging programming on art and culture primarily for adult audiences, such as gallery talks, panel discussions, film screenings, concerts, performances, and workshops. Programs take inspiration from the Museum’s vast global permanent collection and changing exhibitions to create community and connection. These programmatic experiences, crafted to draw thousands of new and returning visitors to the BMA each year, are often conceived in collaboration with community partners to expand and deepen relationships within Birmingham and to engage the power within the Magic City.
Primary Responsibilities
•Engage our collection, exhibitions, and mission to develop a broad spectrum of programs, including (but not limited to), gallery talks, conversations, lectures, performances, screenings, workshops, and after hours events, as well as our popular quarterly family festivals.
•Strengthens and sustains relationships with Birmingham’s creative community, as well as other civic, educational, and cultural organizations, by collaborating on programming at the Museum. This includes co-creating and shaping content along with external partners.
•Collaborates internally with the Learning and Engagement department and the Curatorial department on using collection and exhibitions as platforms for public engagement, creativity, and community, and ways to identify, attract, and grow new audiences.
•Schedules, facilitates, and manages all aspects of public programs, including acting as a liaison with speakers and performers and coordinating their schedule; writing contract letters; facilitating travel and accommodations; arranging for A/V and event set up; and processing payment requests.
•Analyzes and evaluates programs to continually improve offerings and ensure positive experiences for visitors.
•Works closely with the Marketing and Communications department on audience cultivation and development as well as creating promotional content.
•Oversees and manages the budget for all public programs.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree with demonstrated course work and/or specialization in the arts (art, art history, museum studies)
Three years of experience conceptualizing and organizing public programs, particularly for adult audiences

Founded in 1951, the Birmingham Museum of Art is deeply invested in education and engagement and serves as a resource for communities locally, nationally, and internationally. It houses one of the finest collections in the Southeast of the United States. More than 27,000 objects displayed and housed within the Museum represent a rich panorama of cultures, including those from Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa, including work by both Pre-Columbian and Native North American artists. Highlights include the Museum’s collection of the arts of Asia, Vietnamese ceramics, the Kress collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from the late 13th century to the 1750s, and the Museum’s world-renowned collection of Wedgwood, the largest outside of England.
