About the role
We are seeking a dynamic Programs Consultant to join our team on a maternity cover basis through early August 2025. This role will focus on supporting the  planning and executing of public programs related to Africa and the diaspora, from ideation to execution. The successful candidate will play a key role in executing public programs in FY 25, shaping the organization’s programming calendar for FY 26, responding to collaboration opportunities, and more.

This is a temporary, maternity cover position with an expected end date of early August 2025. The consultant will report to the Programs and Exhibitions Coordinator and work closely with the Associate Director of Curatorial Projects, and other team members.

Scope of Work
Program Development & Execution:

  • Support the planning and execution of public programs, including film screenings, book talks, panel discussions, and community events like Africa Day and Museum Mile.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to develop new program ideas aligned with the organization’s mission and audience interests.
  • Support program logistics, including securing speakers and panelists, coordinating with vendors, and overseeing technical needs.
  • Support the execution of public programs by assisting with event logistics, including arranging chairs and tables, including lifting and carrying materials, setting up signage, and making real-time adjustments to the space as needed.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Respond to and evaluate collaboration inquiries from external partners.
  • Build and maintain relationships with program participants, speakers, and community stakeholders.
  • Act as a key point of contact during events, ensuring smooth execution and high-quality attendee experience.

Team Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Programs and Exhibitions Coordinator and the Associate Director of Curatorial Projects to align programming with exhibition and curatorial goals.
  • Collaborate with the communications team to promote programs effectively.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven experience in programming, ideally in public programs related to Africa and the diaspora.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to take programs from concept to completion.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility to work evenings/weekends and attend in-person meetings at The Africa Center at least twice a week (or more as needed).
