Poster House is the first museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to the design and history of posters. Opening in June 2019 in New York City, Poster House provides a space for inquiry for all those interested in design, advertising, and public interventions, with an aim to improve design literacy among the general public. Through its robust permanent collection, progressive rotating exhibitions, community-centered events, and innovative school programming, Poster House explores what posters say about society and how graphic design continues to impact the world with an emphasis on visual literacy.

Position Summary:
The Educator of Youth Initiatives and Accessibility (EYIA) for Poster House oversees the delivery of tours and programs for K-12 grade school groups, college groups, and special needs groups. The EYIA collaborates with the Manager of Education to write tours and coordinate offerings for a variety of school-aged and special needs audiences to establish a welcoming and educational experience for all. This role is responsible for delivering tours to all audiences, as well as outreach to schools and community organizations, and relationship-building with external partners and communities. 

This position reports to the Manager of Education. The regular schedule for this role is 10am-6pm Monday-Friday with flexibility for after-hours and weekend work as needed (approximately ten weekend days per year).

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Be the primary educator delivering interactive, inquiry-based tours for middle school, high school, and college groups 
  • Be an additional educator for curatorial-style tours for adult groups regularly occurring during Museum open hours and after hours
  • Oversee Poster House’s current accessibility efforts including delivery of accessible offerings as well as building and maintaining relationships with a variety of local communities; identify areas for expansion (including, but not limited to, sensory-friendly offerings, tours for those with memory issues, and ASL tours)
  • Lead monthly Vibrant Verbal Description tours over Zoom for audiences of low-vision; lead in-person Vibrant Verbal Description tours 
  • Coordinate and create accessible label copy for each exhibition (large format text for digital labels, alt-text for exhibition checklists, easy-read exhibition summaries, etc.) 
  • Manage and create both print and digital accessible content including rack cards, social guides for neurodivergent audiences, and website content highlighting the museum’s accessibility offerings; run annual accessibility audit of the museum’s website with the Chief Technology Officer
  • Educate staff on the museum’s accessibility offerings and maintain up-to-date knowledge on the state of the field; be the point person for maintenance and availability of accessibility tools (assistive listening devices, large print iPads, etc.)
  • Assist in the creation of Bloomberg Connects app content development including the creation of audio tours and accessible content on the platform
  • Attend weekly staff meetings as well as other meetings as needed
  • Monitor and maintain correspondence on the access@posterhouse.org email address 
  • Assist with programmatic offerings during museum’s opening hours, including First Friday programming and occasional weekend programming

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in creating and supporting inclusive, diverse, and respectful offerings and environments including knowledge of provisions of the ADA and other state guidelines as well as assistive technology, use of auxiliary aids, and software available to visitors with disabilities
  • Experience working in informal education, especially with K-12 children, and multigenerational groups
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Museum Studies, History, Design History, Art History, or Fine Art field or equivalent experience 
  • Self-motivated and able to work alone and in a team environment
  • Strong and engaging public speaking skills
  • Project management experience, including time management, coordination, and organizational skills
  • Flexibility with schedule across all seven days per week as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on accessibility projects at a non-profit
  • Experience working in an art museum
  • A strong interest in design history
  • Experience producing print and digital content
  • Experience leading dynamic, engaging tours
  • Experience working with digital project management tools such as Airtable, Asana, and Google Suite

Physical Demands:

  • Perform desk-based computer tasks, including using a computer screen for long periods of time, typing, and making phone calls
  • Stand for 60- to 90-minutes at a time while moving about the exhibition space to give tours
  • Project voice clearly for up to two-hours at a time, occasionally multiple times per day
  • Adjust or move objects up to 30 lbs in all directions

Poster House currently operates with a hybrid work model with staff working both remotely and on-site. The Educator of Youth Initiatives and Accessibility position would be able to participate in this hybrid work model, with an expected minimum of four days per week on site depending on tour volume, while having the ability to attend department and staff meetings in person or virtually. The salary range for the Educator of Youth Initiatives and Accessibility role is $68,000–$72,000 commensurate with experience. Full-time Poster House employees receive 2 personal days, 5 sick days, and 2 bereavement days per year, as well as 20 vacation days, and are eligible for an extensive benefits package, including a fully-matched 401K plan after one year of employment at the museum.
