If so, this internship is the perfect opportunity for you! Here in the cosmic hamlet by the sea, Homer, Alaska, the Pratt Museum is seeking a Collections Intern to work on a major project. Spend sixteen weeks at the end of the road, working with the collections in Alaska’s first accredited museum. You’ll gain experience with a variety of collections materials, including natural history specimens, First Alaskans items, and an array of artistic mediums. This opportunity includes provided housing at no cost to the the intern, as well as a total stipend of $7,367 over the course of 16 weeks.

The project is a great opportunity to work with a diverse museum collection, and gain hands-on experience with collections handling, data management, and PastPerfect museum software, which is used across the industry. The intern will assist with specialized technical and administrative tasks relating to collections management and care. The objectives of the project are to increase accessibility of the Pratt Museum’s collections and preserve local and regional history through improved recordkeeping.

JOB SUMMARY
The Pratt Museum is seeking a detail oriented, dedicated and enthusiastic recent graduate of Museum Studies, or related fields, to assist with the migration of our collections database. The project is a great opportunity to work with a diverse museum collection, and gain hands-on experience with collections handling, data management, and PastPerfect museum software, which is used across the industry. POSITION REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate will be available to work full time hours during the Spring semester of 2025 (January 2025 – May 2025). The intern will engage in meaningful work, primarily focused on the migration of data between the two software systems, however there will be opportunities for special projects within the collections relating to object cataloging towards the overall goal of completing the project. Position requirements include data entry, file migration, collections inventory, and basic artifact handling. The intern will learn about the Kachemak Bay Region, and the diverse cultures which have made the area home over the centuries. This position is in person in Homer, Alaska. Housing will be provided at no cost to the intern, as well as a stipend to cover travel and expenses. Qualified applicants should have familiarity with collections management and be enrolled in or completed graduate level coursework in Museum Studies, Anthropology, Art History, or similar. A basic understanding of artifact handling and data entry is required, and an interest in local history is a plus.

- Ideal candidate will have familiarity with collections management, experience, especially with Past Perfect Five or Past Perfect Web is a bonus
- Enrollment in or recent completion of graduate level coursework in Museum Studies, Anthropology, Art History, or similar required
- Basic understanding of data entry and artifact handling required
- Strong computer skills
- Previous experience with museum database software a plus but not required
- Interest in local history
- Clear handwriting skills
- Excellent written and strong verbal communication skills
- Ability to work alone and with a group
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
- Able to lift 15 pounds
- Strong interest in collections management, archives, data management and museum registration
