What is the Cokie Roberts Fellowship for Women’s History?
The Cokie Roberts Research Fund for Women’s History will support one to three annual fellowships for emerging or established historians, journalists, authors, or graduate students who perform and publish new research to elevate women’s history for the general public using the records held by the National Archives.
Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants must be emerging or established historians, journalists, authors, or graduate students with proven writing skills, a demonstrated passion for women’s history, and the ability to perform in-person research at a National Archives facility. Applicants can be based anywhere in the U.S.

Applications require written responses to project proposal questions, a resume/CV (three pages maximum), one (1) letter of recommendation, and three (3) samples of work. Samples can be submitted as pdf or word file formats and should be no more than ten (10) pages each. Selected samples are up to the discretion of the applicant, but samples from public press outlets are preferred.
When are applications due?
Completed applications are due to the National Archives Foundation any time between December 2, 2024 and April 14, 2025. The application window closes at 11:59 p.m. eastern on April 14.
How will fellowships be selected?
A review panel of National Archives Foundation board members, National Archives and Records Administration staff, and women’s history experts will convene to review applications and award the fellowships. The application review will take place from April through June.
Applicants selected as finalists will be interviewed by the review panel. Interviews will take place online during the weeks of May 25 and June 1, 2025. All applicants will receive written notification on whether they have been selected for the fellowship in June 2025.

How many fellowships are available?
The Cokie Roberts Research Fund for Women’s History will support one to three annual Fellowships. At the discretion of the review panel, additional applicants may be designated as “Commended Scholars” or “Official Finalists.”
Can past applicants or finalists apply again?
Yes, past applicants are eligible to apply again. Applicants selected as Commended Scholars are eligible to apply again with the caveat that their application must focus on a new topic.

How are the samples of work submitted?
Samples of work can be attached in the application form as pdf or word file formats. Samples should be no more than ten (10) pages. Selected samples are up to the applicant’s discretion, but preference is for work samples from public press outlets.
What are the responsibilities of the fellow?
Recipients of the fellowship will perform original research on women’s history for a published book, article, essay, film, short series, or art piece to benefit the general public. Final works can appear in a newspaper, magazine, website, book, or stage that increases the public awareness of the National Archives.
What are some additional benefits of the fellowship?
Benefits of this paid, short-term research fellowship include:
● up to $12,500 for one to three fellowships;
● on-site research training by a National Archives staff archivist;
● meetings with the Archivist of the United States and Deputy Archivist of the United
States;
● meeting with other National Archives staff related to the research topic;
● being featured in a NARA/NAF public program; and
● being interviewed for a NARA news article.
