Position Description:
Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s staff writer/editor writes, assigns, edits, and manages production of captivating mission-focused content for the Garden’s website, marketing, and other projects. As a member of the Garden’s Visitor Experience & Marketing division, they help shape and tell the stories of the Garden as well as inspire curiosity and a love of nature among diverse readers. The successful candidate is an open, generative, and engaged professional with a journalist’s storytelling skills and a deep understanding of how to connect with varied audiences. 

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with content producers on Digital, Marketing, Membership, and Interpretation teams to create and share vibrant content and messaging across the institution. Track timely stories and themes through external communications meetings and Trello board.
  • Manage content calendar for and production of blog, plants in bloom spotlights, and web features. Together with director of Digital, develop story objectives and assignments. 
  • Keep abreast of ephemeral stories of the Garden’s collections and programs and opportunities to bring readers behind the scenes by maintaining close relationships with members of the Horticulture and Education teams. 
  • Research, write, and ghostwrite original content.
  • Collaborate with staff and subject experts on blog posts and other varied projects.
  • Surface seasonal content and stories, sharing content links with colleagues and maintaining fresh content on bbg.org.
  • Generate ideas for original online features and opportunities to repurpose existing assets.
  • Review and report on engagement analytics, using findings to shape future content.
  • Perform web content markup and manage images in CMS.
  • Perform other related duties or special projects as directed.

Qualifications:

  • Five or more years’ experience writing/producing content for digital media
  • Three or more years’ experience in editorial management in a comparable position
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Specific knowledge about horticulture, gardening, botany, and natural science preferred 
  • Excellent research, writing, assigning, editing, and communication skills
  • Ability to follow house style and match tone and language to purpose of publication
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and prioritize projects, balancing striving for perfection with meeting deadlines
  • Proficiency with basic web tools such as HTML, content management systems, and design and photography software
  • Photography production and editing skills, along with eye for image selection, preferred 

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary Range – $64,000 -$80,000

    Brooklyn Botanic Garden considers several factors when determining the appropriate salary to offer a candidate within the listed salary range. These factors include (but are not limited to), the scope and responsibilities of the position, a candidate’s relevant work experience and education/training, prior union/ DC37 experience (for union positions), job skills, equity across the institution, as well as market and organizational considerations.
