Description
The Keith Haring Curatorial Fellowship at Performance Space New York offers ambitious, creative early-career curators an opportunity to develop their interest in and experience with performance, events, and live art. This two-year fellowship will provide practical experience and guided experimentation in non-profit curatorial work for those beginning their professional careers, whether or not they have received formal academic training. Fellows will connect and collaborate with local, national, and international artists, East Village and Performance Space community members, and creative professionals in the industry at large, generally demystifying the path to becoming a professional curator. 

In the first year, the fellow will work closely with Performance Space’s curatorial and production staff on ongoing programming. In the second year, the fellow will have an opportunity to propose and execute an independent curatorial project as part of Performance Space’s season. Throughout the fellowship term, the fellow will assist with the archive: developing archive protocols, connecting with documentarians from the organization’s past, and engaging with archivists and historians familiar with the history of PS122 and Performance Space New York.

Curatorial fellows will develop skills in production as well as curatorial work, including:

  • Learning the basics of performance production and assisting the production team.
  • Working closely on the logistical details and budget for select programs and performances.
  • Liaising with artists while they are on-site and attending rehearsals .
  • Assisting the Artistic Director with research, program development, studio visits, and writing texts.
  • Contributing feedback on Performance Space New York’s overall program including the organization’s commitment to community, accessibility, and programming approaches.
  • Supporting ongoing programming.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working with creative professionals and with artists.
  • Demonstrate interest in and willingness to learn about experimental performance, events, and exhibition-making, especially interdisciplinary work across genres including performance art, dance, theater, visual art, moving image, fashion, and music.
  • Be interested in gaining institutional experience and take advantage of professional development opportunities.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Have an exceptional ability to be a team player in a fast-paced office environment.
  • Be creative, ambitious, and willing to take initiative.

General Details

  • Full-time, exempt position, 40 hours per week, in-person and onsite 
  • $50,000 annual salary, paid biweekly
  • Benefits including basic health coverage 
  • 2 weeks paid vacation time
  • Ideal start date is January 6, 2025
