Job Summary

The New-York Historical Society is seeking a Coordinator of Teen Programs to support and facilitate our out-of-school digital humanities programs and internships for high school students. The Coordinator of Teen Programs reports to the Vice President for Education and works closely with the Manager of Teen Programs. The vast majority of Teen Programs take place in the Tech Commons @ New-York Historical, our digital humanities classroom.

Over the last seven years, New-York Historical has made a commitment to framing its longstanding high school programs around the critical importance of the digital humanities. Students in our programs learn to conduct historic research using our vast museum and library collections and build tech skills so they can share their research via dynamic digital projects (websites, digital games, podcasts, digital maps, online exhibits, etc.). The Coordinator of Teen Programs is the facilitator of the Tech Scholars program and a co-facilitator of the Student Historians internship program. In addition, they fulfill critical administrative duties for the team, including data tracking, communications, and recruitment/outreach.

The successful candidate will be passionate about working with teens; skilled in HTML/CSS; knowledgeable and/or curious about working in other digital platforms; tech savvy; passionate about career development for young people; and well-versed in American History.

Essential Job Duties

  • Facilitate Tech Scholars, our week-long digital humanities courses that run during school breaks and in the summer up to six times per year. Current courses include Tech Scholars: Web Design (HTML/CSS), Tech Scholars: Game Design (using Gamemaker), and Tech Scholars: Podcasting (using Audacity);
    • Instruct all sessions of Tech Scholars for approximately 20-25 students per session, which includes lessons on both learning and researching history and practicing and building tech skills. Lessons take place in our museum galleries and in our Tech Commons classroom.
    • Recruit and coordinate with guest mentors and speakers for Tech Scholars programs.
    • Schedule Tech Scholars programs and handle all classroom bookings and logistics coordination.
    • Recruit, interview, and select students for the program.
    • Collect relevant data; conduct and analyze program evaluations.
    • Work with the VP for Education to regularly review and revise program curricula and, with time, consider opportunities for developing new versions of Tech Scholars.
  • Contribute to the Student Historians Internship program as a co-facilitator with the Manager of Teen Programs (who oversees most of this program);
    • Attend the weekly Wednesday afternoon/evening sessions of Student Historians. Serve as a co-teacher and occasionally lead some lessons.
    • Contribute to the intern selection process by reviewing applications and participating in interviews.
  • Lead the marketing and outreach efforts for all teen programs, including e-mail communications, web text updates, engaging partners in the teen programs space, and attending opportunity fairs at schools and community-based organizations;
  • Coordinate all administrative needs for the Teen Programs team, including calendar reservations, e-blast coordination, managing the Teen Programs email account, ordering catering and supplies, and collecting attendance and other data;
  • Contribute to the broader Teen Programs team’s work, including bi-weekly team meetings where we discuss current and future programs, best practices in the field, and opportunities for partnerships and growth;
  • Contribute to grant proposals and reports, as needed;
  • Contribute to Education Division-wide initiatives and events, as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, museum education, digital humanities, education, computer science, or another relevant field;
  • Experience working with high school students, ideally outside of school hours and/or in a museum setting;
  • Knowledge of and experience with HTML/CSS to the point where you can teach teens how to code their own websites;
  • Knowledge of other digital humanities platforms such as Gamemaker and Audacity a plus. Curiosity and a willingness to learn such platforms is a requirement if you do not have prior experience;
  • Previous experience teaching coding and/or other digital humanities platforms is a plus;
  • Experience with museum-based teaching, with an emphasis on student-led and inquiry-based instruction;
  • Knowledge of and interest in American history;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • A commitment to collaboration and teamwork;
  • Highly organized with great attention to detail;
  • Skillful ability to multitask and balance multiple priorities;
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace;
  • Ability to commit to our current schedule of programs: Every Wednesday (4:30-7pm) during the school year for Student Historians; Weeklong (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm) runs of Tech Scholars during NYC Public Schools’ Mid-Winter and Spring breaks and select weeks in the summer;
  • Ability to work occasional other weekends and evenings, as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This position will require the employee to lift (up to 25 lbs.), bend, stoop, walk, speak and stand for up to 7 hours in a day. Sedentary computer work is also required.

Compensation & Benefits

The expected salary for this position is $50,000.
