The Curator of Education is responsible for developing, guiding, directing, and managing The Robert S. Peabody Institute of Archaeology’s (RSPI) Education & Outreach Program. Most importantly, the Curator of Education is a teacher, who works closely with Phillips Academy faculty to develop and teach archaeology, anthropology, and history-based lessons that support the Academy’s curricula. The Curator of Education reports to the Institute Director and works closely with the Curator of Collections. This is a 12 month, non-housed, full time staff position with a Monday through Friday schedule.
JOB DUTIES
Schedule and teach Phillips Academy classes
- Network and build relationships with Phillips Academy faculty.
- Strategically develop object-based teaching and curriculum for classes in a variety of departments such as art, biology, foreign languages, history, music, and physics.
- Teach lessons to Phillips Academy classes, considering the RSPI as an “on campus fieldtrip destination.”
- Assess programmatic effectiveness of lessons.
Outreach and Community Engagement
- Key point person for the RSPI’s outreach efforts to interested communities.
- Assist with development and fundraising through educationally based programs and events.
- Develop strategic approaches, programs, and projects to connect with communities beyond the Phillips Academy campus.
- Lead the Peabody Board of Advisor’s Education & Outreach Committee, working closely with volunteers and campus partners.
- Work with Tribal partners to strengthen and support existing relationships based on educational objectives.
- Partner with other individuals and organizations to promote and facilitate archaeology-based education, including the Journal of Archaeology & Education, founded and managed by the RSPI.
Requirements
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate degree in education preferred. We also will consider applicants with graduate degrees in archaeology, anthropology, Native American studies, or Museum Studies with a concentration in Museum Education.
- 5-7 years teaching experience, preferably in a museum setting or high school level.
- Experience developing lesson plans and curricula.
- Familiarity with electronic or digital tools, media, and resources to enhance the learning experience and connect with broader audiences.
- Experience working with cultural heritage and material culture collections, including object-handling skills.
