SUMMARY / OBJECTIVE:

The Moonshot Museum seeks a detail-oriented Manager of Operations & Visitor Services to manage execution of daily operations, logistics, and revenue streams for Moonshot Museum. The museum, located in Pittsburgh, PA, opened in Fall 2022 as Pennsylvania’s first-ever space museum, offering the public a rare opportunity to engage with exhibits about the contemporary space industry while watching the real-time construction of spacecraft destined for the Moon. Moonshot Museum operates a combination of open public hours, closed days/times for visits for pre-booked student programs and tours and serves as a private event venue. The Manager of Operations & Visitor Services is a self-starter who has the exciting and challenging task of managing the growing daily operations needs of the institution.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Set and maintain high standards to ensure a welcoming, efficient, positive experience for Moonshot Museum visitors.
  • Supervise, schedule, and train part-time front desk staff members (Moonshot Pathfinders)
  • Manage a robust and diverse volunteer corps of 35+, including supervision, scheduling, recruitment, onboarding, enrichment, and coordinating supplies for event outreach support.
  • Manage a small onsite gift shop and online store: sourcing merchandise, ordering, tracking, and maintaining inventory.
  • Train staff and volunteers on operations and emergency policies and procedures.
  • Manage museum admissions for visitors and groups, including point of sale system, monthly financial statements, and responding to public inquiries.
  • Manage membership program, including database, member correspondence, and incentives.
  • Builds monthly data reports on museum attendance, program bookings, and retail.
  • Interface with Astrobotic Technology’s accounting, human resources, operations, and marketing teams to ensure a safe and efficient experience at a museum that shares a campus with a working space robotics company.
  • Process program booking requests from schools and other entities, including executing contracts and ensuring payment is received.
  • Work with external vendors to ensure a clean, well-stocked, functioning museum.
  • Coordinate day-of operational needs for public hours and on-site field trips to ensure part-time and volunteer staffing, building access, group parking, and being on-site to support operations during field trips as needed.

REPORTING:

  • The Manager of Operations & Visitor Services reports to the Executive Director and is a core member of the museum leadership team.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Manager of Operations & Visitor Services directly supervises part-time front-desk staff member (Moonshot Pathfinder) and a 35-member corps of Moonshot volunteers.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Detail-oriented, organized, efficient, strong sense of integrity and accountability.
  • A creative problem solver and strategic thinker, with an understanding of best / emerging practices in non-profit, educational programming, volunteer management, or sales operations, and comfort learning more about the contemporary space industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively, without close supervision and within tight deadlines, balancing collaborative and autonomous approaches to work.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask on simultaneous projects and be flexible in a fast-paced environment where demands often change.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite; an aptitude for learning and utilizing software.
  • Strong supervisory people and project management skills, including the ability to multitask.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and comfort with ambiguity in a non-traditional museum setting. This position plays a key role in supporting the execution and growth of Moonshot Museum’s operations.
  • The ability to interact and communicate with a variety of audiences, including educators, families, K-12 students, and space industry professionals, in a professional and engaging manner. Empathy and emotional intelligence are critical skills in this role.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Undergraduate degree in non-profit management, business, marketing, museum studies, communications, or related fields OR an equivalent array of professional experience.
  • Three years demonstrated professional experience and progressive responsibility in public-facing operations, informal education, non-profit, sales, retail, or museum roles.
  • Supervisory and / or volunteer management experience preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Satisfactory PA State Police Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse History Certification.
  • Satisfactory FBI Criminal Record check.
  • Satisfactory professional references check.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to pass Department of Motor Vehicles check.
  • Willingness to relocate to Pittsburgh, PA.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The position’s schedule is Sunday – Thursday, serving as active Manager-on-Duty on-site at the museum during open public hours on Thursdays and Sundays.
  • The Manager of Operations & Visitor Services is a hybrid on-site / off-site position, working from home office 1-3 days per week, and supporting on-site tours, field trips, and events as scheduled.
  • At times, the position requires being the first point-of-contact staffing the reception desk at the entrance to the museum.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, highly-sensory, stimulating work environment due to constant interaction with other staff and visitors, including children.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for long periods, move up to 50 lbs., and position self to interact with visitors inside the Museum space.

POSITION TYPE / EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

  • The Manager of Operations & Visitor Services is an exempt, full-time position overseeing daily operations of the Museum. Candidates must be comfortable and prepared to work weekends. Availability on evenings and holidays will be required.

COMPENSATION:

  • The salary for the Manager of Operations & Visitor Services is $52,000 per year.
