Overview of Organization

The Ukrainian Institute of America, Inc. (UIA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with the fundamental purpose of promoting and preserving the heritage and culture of Ukraine and its diaspora. For more than 75 years, it has done this by showcasing the art, literature, music, history and traditions of Ukraine as revealed through its people and diverse communities. Founded in 1948 by William Dzus, immigrant, inventor, industrialist, and philanthropist, the UIA is permanently housed in the Fletcher-Sinclair mansion at 2 East 79th Street at Fifth Avenue in New York. The building is designated as a National Historic Landmark and protected as a contributing element of the New York Metropolitan Museum Historic District.

 

Overview of Position

The UIA is seeking a Communications Manager to be responsible for developing and executing communication strategies across various platforms. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager will be responsible for shaping the UIA’s messaging to consistently reflect its mission and brand and communicate with its multiple internal and external constituencies.

The Communications Manager will be an integral part of the planning, managing and implementing of all mission-related activities of the organization, responsible for shaping the UIA’s messaging of key information to relevant stakeholders. The position requires a proactive approach, exceptional organizational skills, and experience in using current digital media and CRM tools. The ideal candidate will be meticulous in attention to detail, adaptable in a frequently evolving environment, and one who thrives in a collaborative workplace. This position presents an exciting opportunity to engage not only with the UIA Membership, internal staff and core audiences, but with a diverse community of local and international cultural professionals.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and produce strategic collateral, periodic newsletters, press releases and promotional materials in connection with programming and other UIA activities
  • Manage the UIA’s social media accounts, post content, and moderate interactions
  • Craft and implement email campaigns, website content, while maintaining content, brand and design consistency
  • Track and assess performance analytics related to digital communications
  • Create and manage a content calendar for deployment of digital and print collateral
  • Ensure appropriate recording of lectures, discussions, concerts, and other public events
  • Capture (or arrange for capture of) publication-quality photographs and short, shareable video clips for social media, website and other communication platforms
  • Maintain and manage data integrity in CRM platforms, for member and non-member information
  • Develop and maintain relationships with relevant media outlets, managing up-to-date contact information and audiences, using digital tools
  • Develop and maintain relationships with UIA Members
  • Respond to external inquiries from Members, media and the community at large
  • Support the Executive Director and Board President in everyday communications, email management, and communication with the Board of Directors, Membership and others
  • Provide occasional support for fundraising campaigns and grant applications
  • Manage registration, ticketing, invoicing, payment, sponsorship and data management related to programs and UIA Membership
  • Provide administrative support and contribute to office management tasks as necessary
  • Represent the organization at external meetings and actively contribute to achieving team and organizational goals

 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • 3-5 years increasingly progressive communications strategy, content production and crisis management skills with a background in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to articulately and professionally communicate in a clear, positive manner with Members, program participants, partners, and staff, orally and in writing
  • Excellent command of the English language, both oral and written
  • Knowledge of the Ukrainian language and grammar (desired but not required)
  • Self-starter and resourceful, able to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a small, mission-driven team
  • Strategic, creative thinker, able to see the long view as well as near-term actionable concerns
  • Demonstrate comfort working under pressure against multiple deadlines and manage a variety of responsibilities while maintaining a calm work environment and a sense of humor
  • Excellent time management and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience in managing institutional website and social media accounts
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, DonorPerfect, Mailchimp, and Squarespace, including basic photo and video editing
  • Demonstrated interest in Ukrainian culture and history
