Collections Survey Project Staff members are an important part of the Morgan’s collection survey team. The collections survey project seeks to document and assess the Morgan’s collection, including its storage and housing, and make recommendations for optimal organization and preservation. This role supports the survey project through inventory, documentation, and stewardship projects, including but not limited to labeling, rehousing, and data entry. The Morgan has approximately 350,000 objects in its rare collections, which are comprised of a broad spectrum of material, including manuscripts; early printed books; archives; drawings; prints; photographs; music manuscripts and printed music; ancient western Asian seals and tablets; ephemera; and artifacts.

This role reports to the Collections Registrar and works collaboratively with colleagues across the Morgan. This is a full-time temporary position for six months with the possibility of renewal. There are four vacancies available.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required, coursework or Master’s degree in art history, museum studies or ALA accredited program in library, archival, or information studies a plus.
  • Broad knowledge of museum and/or special collections practices in the related fields of collections management, registration, art/special collections handling, conservation, and/or archives.
  • 1–4 years of experience in the field or a combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent computer skills with a command of the Microsoft Office Suite. Strong proficiency with Excel spreadsheets and/or Google Sheets. Experience using The Museum System (TMS); power user beneficial. Experience with Voyager a plus.
  • Keen organizational skills, excellent time management, and attention to detail; ability to sort efficiently in alphabetic, numeric, or alphanumeric order.
  • Diplomatic and clear communicator; demonstrated ability to work successfully with others to achieve institutional objectives.
  • Self-motivated and able to prioritize tasks in order of importance to meet deadlines; ability to keep track of and manage workflow.
  • Following appropriate training, the candidate should be able to handle and lift art and books and move boxes and folders of varying dimensions and weights. The candidate should also have visual acuity.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position requires frequent lifting and carrying of materials up to 40 lbs.; pushing and pulling of book carts; and frequent stooping and reaching.
  • Must be able to move about the work area, between galleries and storage areas, ascend and descend stairs, and stand and/or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must complete TSA Security Threat Assessment application and be approved.

Compensation: $28 per hour
