Digital Content Summer Intern at Independent Curators International

Job Title: Digital Content Summer Intern

Location: New York, NY

Independent Curators International (ICI) supports the work of curators to help create stronger art communities through experimentation, collaboration, and international engagement. Curators are arts community leaders and organizers who champion artistic practice; build essential infrastructures and institutions; and generate public engagement with art. Our collaborative programs connect curators across generations, and across social, political and cultural borders. They form an international framework for sharing knowledge and resources — promoting cultural exchange, access to art, and public awareness for the curator’s role.

The Digital Content Internship offers an opportunity to learn versatile website content production, editorial, and project management skills, and to build a portfolio for future digital content careers. Working closely with the Communications and Digital Content Manager, the intern will collaborate on major projects that are central to ICI’s long-term digital communications goals, support ICI’s mission and grow its reach in advance of our 50th Anniversary in 2025. The Summer Intern will also be actively involved in the ongoing development of a robust communications strategy in an innovative, expanding organization.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Learn website content development and the ICI voice by updating content across our website, implementing our recently-developed style and usage standards on all site text and images, and analyze the current state of archival content available on the site
  2. In the second half of the internship, create an independent archival research project that will be incorporated into ICI’s 50th anniversary planning, including:
  3. Identifying key themes and major milestones of the organization’s history
  4. Suggesting potential avenues for new content that tells stories about ICI’s legacy and its future
  5. Reporting on current website content health and identifying navigation/organization issues for existing content
  6. Collaborate with the Digital Content Manager to develop a report for ICI’s staff and Board of Directors about the archival research project’s findings and recommendations for website development projects to make ICI’s archives and history more publicly visible and engaging during the 50th
  7. Independently manage projects, including keeping calendars up to date (and proactively updating the Digital Content Manager on project timelines), organizing documents and collating information for website updates or public-facing content, documenting procedures, and contacting members of ICI’s staff to receive missing information
  8. Provide occasional administrative assistance for the digital content department, including social media content and email newsletters

No specific work experience is necessary, but strong writing and independent research skills are required, and some general computer skills (including familiarity with Google Workspace and the ability to learn how to use a website content management system) will be needed. The following qualifications are also helpful:

  • Ability to conduct internet research on open-ended questions, use critical thinking skills to identify relevant data points and areas where further investigation may be needed, and synthesize information to identify common themes and top-line findings
  • Comfort with writing and editing public-facing materials, and openness to receive writing feedback, make revisions, and suggest changes to writing based on best practices
  • Attention to detail when working with editing conventions, ability to work with in-house style guides and awareness of style, grammar, punctuation, usage, etc.; familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style is a plus
  • Interest in website-based content production and ability to learn specific software with training and independent experimentation, particularly website content management systems, Airtable, Google Workspace, and/or Mailchimp
  • Interest in learning about communications practices regarding contemporary art for a wide variety of audiences including curators, artists, arts organizations, galleries, and press
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively and work both independently and in collaboration with a small team

Salary and Hours: $17 per hour, 20-25 hours per week. Office hours are Monday–Friday, 10 am to 6 pm. Applicants should be based in New York City by the start date and open to working a hybrid in-office and remote schedule.
